SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CBS13/AP) Gov. Gavin Newsom is sending 31 disaster specialists to Puerto Rico after a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck the islands southern coast on Saturday, the latest in a series of quakes over the past week that has toppled homes and schools and left more than 4,000 people in shelters.
Newsom said the deployment comes in response to the Puerto Rican governments request for assistance.
The Governors Office of Emergency Services says in a statement that the team will depart from Sacramento on Sunday and will spend 16 days working with emergency management and public safety officials there. The group consists of experts in incident and emergency management, engineering and safety assessment, planning, public information, debris management and crisis counseling.
Earlier this week, Newsom approved the deployment of four firefighters to assist with search and rescue operations.

(47,517 posts)I won't be surprised when he runs for president some day in the future. He's running California more like a country than a state.

(47,517 posts)I lived in California for nine years and we adored him when he was mayor of San Francisco. I moved east before he became Lt. Governor, but I remember hoping that some day he would run for governor. I'd have no problem voting for him for president some day. He is smart, getting the necessary experience and exposure first.
Not a qualification for public office, but he is terribly good looking as well!!!

Republicans tend to be the exception to many rules! But you're right, it is excellent preparation for a future president.

(63,912 posts)I just googled him. He's got a pretty good bio, but an extra-marital affair which was made public could be a problem (I know, compared to you know who it doesn't look so awful).
It would be amusing seeing him debate Drumpf, that's for sure...
I am quite sure that is the direction he is headed. His political decisions so far have seemed very strategic. In 2011, many people wanted him to run for governor, but he wisely chose to go with Lt. Governor first. Unlike too many ambitious politicians, he didn't get too far ahead of himself.
I remember the extra-marital affair, but he seemed sincerely remorseful and any political repercussions were short lived. Meanwhile, it appears that he was still married to Kimberly Guilfoyle at the time. His marriage to her might be more damaging than his affair. That's okay, most people have had relationships they would like to forget.
His history as a progressive innovator is rather incredible. In 2004, Newsom gained national attention when he directed the San Francisco citycounty clerk to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, in violation of the then-current state law. That was really gutsy. He always seemed to be a step or two ahead of everyone else. We adored him!
He not only had great ideas, he actually knew how to implement them.

A lot of people don't appreciate what a big deal it is to be governor of California. Jerry Brown and Gavin Newsom have some an excellent job.

(26 posts)That way they can vote in droves against Trump causing him to lose those States and the election. Hopefully a Democratic president will help rebuild Puerto Rico.

What a pathetic little man. He will go to his death bed never realizing that the only way to get anything out of life is by giving.
