At 11:15 a student reported seeing a suspicious individual holding a rifle. As of 1300, no sign of the person.

The base remains on lockdown while law enforcement sweeps the area looking for whoever it might be.

But they saw a rifle not a handgun.

It could be rifle practise. When I marched in the Navy, they gave us fake rifles.

But most bases don't allow weapons without approval. Even carry permits do not apply on military bases unless prior approval from the Commanding Officer is obtained.

So, there should be a record of rifles currently in use on the base for that day. They are probably doing a count now.

Most of the people on military bases do not carry firearms of any type on a daily basis, Only the Military Police carry weapons. For the most part, the only time you'll see soldiers with firearms is when they are training and then they typically don't have ammo unless they are at a shooting range.

Military bases are for the most part gun-free zones.
