Study: Voting rule changes may deter 10M Hispanics

WASHINGTON — The combined effects of voter roll purges, demands for proof of citizenship and photo identification requirements in several states may hinder at least 10 million Hispanic citizens who seek to vote this fall, civil rights advocates warn in a new report.

In an analysis based on government data, civil rights group The Advancement Project identified legal barriers that could deter voter registration and participation among eligible Hispanics. In some of those states, the group's researchers said, the number of voter-eligible Latino citizens potentially blocked by those barriers exceeds the margin of victory in the 2008 election.

The report called for repeal of policies that wrongfully inhibit Hispanic voters, and asked that the Justice Department investigate and prosecute "any related voting rights violations."

Sixteen states have either adopted or are pursuing citizenship-related purges of their voter rolls, the report said. Those states are Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Washington.

Those states are home to nearly 5.5 million registered Latino voters, and 1.1 million naturalized citizens from Latin America. Colorado and Florida identified voters for possible purging by comparing their voter registrations with driver's license databases that show which voters indicated they were immigrants — thereby creating a problem, the report said.

"Naturalized citizens typically received their driver's licenses when they were legal immigrants but before becoming naturalized citizens (and before registering to vote); therefore, this method generates lists of voters to be checked that targets naturalized citizens," the report said.

That is why REPUBLICANS tried to nail him with the fast and furious fiasco, of which he was cleared just last week, to get rid of him.

11. This is a brand new report and a press call is scheduled for tomorrow

per the Advancement Project website. It's pretty important so my guess is that TAP will file against the states along with others and I'm pretty sure the DOJ will get involved. The TAP, the advancement project site also lists updates on litigation under resources.

12. There is one other level to consider...

If all these states get into a back and forth jostle between the courts and prosecutors up to and/or near the election, it doesn't matter if the ID laws get bumped, put on hold or settled. It will create a situation where there will be accusations and recounts to the hilt. THAT is when the voting fraud will be the easiest to accomplish.

I can just hear the poll reps say "we're confused" and voters say they are confused, the state's secretaries say "there is confusion" then all hell will break out, the vote counts are held up for ever and... hey, we could have fraud a la mode, a constitutional crisis or both.

Forbid we have a constitutional crisis because that means Mitt Romney will be the president due to the fact that the House will take a vote to decide who becomes POTUS.

which is purely a voter intimidation effort. Challenge everyone who is not white and slow the voting process down so much that many legitimate voters -- mostly Democrats -- don't get to the polls because of work schedules, etc.

In California several years back, one Republican congressman ("B-2 Bob" Dornan, I think it was) posted near each polling place men in overalls which closely resembled those of the INS, in an effort to drive away new Hispanic citizens.

He lost.
