New breast cancer clues found in gene analysis

Source: CBS

NEW YORK — Scientists reported Sunday that they have completed a major analysis of the genetics of breast cancer, finding four major classes of the disease. They hope their work will lead to more effective treatments, perhaps with some drugs already in use.

The new finding offers hints that one type of breast cancer might be vulnerable to drugs that already work against ovarian cancer.

The study, published online Sunday by the journal Nature, is the latest example of research into the biological details of tumors, rather than focusing primarily on where cancer arises in the body.

The hope is that such research can reveal cancer's genetic weaknesses for better drug targeting.

A lot of cancer research has been sponsored by our government. Is this yet another area that Rmoney wants to cut?

Although the new research is intriguing, it is a long way from changing outcomes significantly. Survival rates for breast and prostate cancer have improved, mostly due to early detection (thank you Planned Parenthood!). But the treatment of the ones we can't catch early has not improved much over the last 20 years. Brain and pancreatic cancers are still death sentences, rarely surviving 2 years past diagnosis.

My mom didn't make it more than 3 months after her pancreatic cancer diagnosis, and her oncologist told me there is no better treatment on the horizon.

Congress (Republicans) would rather spend money on bombs than figuring out how to treat cancer--even though cancer kills many times more Americans EVERY YEAR than any foreign enemy ever did.
