Billionaire Tom Steyer quits Democratic primary race
Source: NBC News
Tom Steyer, the California activist billionaire who has largely been a nonfactor in the Democratic primary campaign, dropped out of the race on Saturday night.
Steyer's departure came after a disappointing finish in the South Carolina Democratic primary. With 70 percent of the vote in, Steyer had just 11.5 percent of the vote despite spending millions of dollars on campaigning there.
"Theres no question today that this campaign, we were disappointed with where we came out," Steyer told supporters in Columbia, S.C.
"But I said if I didnt see a path to winning that I'd suspend my campaign, and honestly I can't see a path where I can win the presidency."

(32,726 posts)He could use his money much more wisely, for example by funding a liberal-minded national news network to combat the fake news of the Faux network. Getting Democratic candidates elected to the Senate should be his urgent goal, if he's still willing to part with more cash after this.

(38,574 posts)what came into my head was that the competition for advertising time (TV) drives up the cost. Someone who has a few million to spend, but not a lot of backing, may be driving up the cost for more viable candidates.
(And no, it's not up to me to decide who is viable and who isn't. I just can't help but think that if Steyer looked at this realistically, he had to know he didn't stand a chance. Also, a lot of the substance of his ads were things that needed to be said, and needed to be heard... There's a lot of stuff that gets factored in. Thank goodness the Democratic Party is filled with candidates that can handle complexity.)

Farewell Mr. Steyer, I look forward to your continued support of Democrats through the next election.

Glad Steyer ran. Glad Steyer said something. Glad Steyer stepped down.
Interesting to see if Steyer has an endorsement and when.
