Have yet to feel the aftershocks but it was quite the jolt!
Just what we don't need right now!

(20,878 posts)Ferndale is about 275 miles north of San Francisco.
A triple fault line runs through it and it all eventually connects to the San Andreas fault.
It is rather common in this part of Calif. but you rarely hear about it being it is in an area with a low population density.
There were two earthquakes back to back in the early 1990s. Both were over a 7.0 magnitude.

(20,878 posts)It is a hotbed for earthquakes.
I ran into a woman from New York that was about to put a down payment on a house there. I advised her to look elsewhere because of all of the earthquakes in that region.
The real estate person did not mention this to her.
She decided right then and there to forget that idea.
It may be nice but my god!

Full article:
It occurred about 70 miles southwest of Eureka at 7:59 pm Sunday, March 8. There are no reports of injuries or damage at this time. And no tsunami threat.
"According to our dispatch center there are no reports of damage or incidents relating to the quake," Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal said.
Nearest town I'm seeing is Eureka, CA on the coast.

(12,684 posts)Near Estacion Coahila, it's along the same main plate fault region as the San Andreas and associated branches. I thought that this weekend's 5.5 was an aftershock of the Easter Quake 2010.

(14,496 posts)Reported on that same Redding TV station today......
The largest was a 5.8 magnitude, 65 miles off the coast of Eureka around 8 p.m. Sunday.
A second quake hit around 11:30 p.m. Sunday in the same area, measuring 4.9 magnitude.
A third earthquake struck around 4 a.m. Monday off the coast of Ferndale, measuring 3.7 magnitude.
Seven other smaller quakes were felt in the same region between Sunday night and Monday morning measuring between 2.5 and 3.5 magnitude.
So far, no damage has been reported.
What is the hooked branch that turns northward along most of the Mexico coast?

Some of the archaeological findings in this area are quite shocking.
I studied it in grad school and
This whole area has a rather frightening history!

(7,514 posts)is slowing while the Hayward fault is increasing. The next mega-quake though will likely be from the Cascadia Subduction Zone, the area of Mendocino Triple Junction and north. You are absolutely right about "shocking".

(20,878 posts)The last time it hit big was in the 1950s.
My father told me about it.
It was so strong that the entire front yard and street looked like waves in the ocean.
He said it made him feel sea sick and he almost vomited from the motion!!
I'll never forget that story! *eek*

(20,878 posts)The Hayward Fault is considered one of the most powerful fault lines in the world, running parallel to the potentially catastrophic San Andreas fault, and 150 years almost to the day, researchers warn it is overdue a quake.
The Calaveras fault system stretches 131 km, from south of Hollister, northward, into the Danville-Walnut Creek area which are in the East Bay of San Francisco.
This could be the same fault that my father spoke of as he was living not far from where the Calaveras fault lies.

Noted no big aftershocks during the night.

(8,843 posts)I am in NE Humboldt county and the largest quake woke me from a nap. There are relatively many quakes locally as, as others have mentioned. three continental plates meet off shore.
The articles have maps and local comments.

(20,878 posts)I went to bed rather early last night as I was not feeling at all well (not unusual for me).
I didn't feel the aftershocks during the night.
Glad I didn't!!
I've lived through so many earthquakes, including the Big One that hit San Francisco in 1989. The Loma Prieta was larger that the history books say. I kept the next day's front page of the Chronicle in fact. It was a 7.3 magnitude.
I've lived on these faults my entire life. The one last night was a strong lateral shake but nothing like the Loma Prieta was!
I hope there won't be any more any time real soon!
