Safeway, Albertsons looking to fill 2,000 positions

Source: KIRO Seattle

Safeway and Albertsons have more than 2,000 openings at its stores across Western Washington and are looking to fill them immediately.

Their parent company said “in order to best serve the increasing needs of our communities throughout the Puget Sound region,” the stores are looking to hire for in-store employees, delivery drivers, personal shoppers and at the distribution center.

Anyone interested can apply online or inquire with the store director of your local Safeway or Albertsons.

Yes. Any covid-19-driven hiring will help -- if only a bit.... pat_k Mar 2020 #7

The demand will be short term. But who knows? Perhaps the people who afford themselves of the service will like it and use it after things have returned to normal.

In need of a med refill and some basic strategic household supplies, I cautiously ventured out, first to COSTCO, then QFC, where I did not feel out of place with gloves, Clorox wipes and sanitizer being commonly used by shoppers and store employees alike.

But when I dropped into Albertson's as one last possible store that was worth checking for rubbing alcohol, it was like no one there was even aware or seemed to care that we (Washington State) are ground zero in the Covid-19 pandemic. Dirty shopping baskets and checkouts, no sanitizers, people touching their faces or each other, kids with hands all over stuff...!

I turned tail and left immediately. Not only did I feel unsafe as a shopper, not a chance I would ever risk working there no matter HOW much they offered to pay me. So, it's no surprise they are desperate for staff!

... perhaps it was just that Albertsons, but I have a feeling that the failure to communicate risks -- and precautions -- comes from the top. "Up the line." Not just the management of a single store.

"We are looking for people immune from the Coronavirus, or simply don't care if they are or not, to distribute commodities to those people who do care. If interested speak to the man in the Gold Vest."

9. I get the skepticism

..but isn't there some hope that these fuckheads aren't completely oblivious on precautions?

They can't hire the immune because identifying the the people who have recovered, and therefore may have some level of immunity, isn't happening. (remains unknown whether immunity is lasts, anyway.)

In the absence of testing the best we can do is bet that a large percentage of the people who don't have symptoms are not incubating the virus and are therefore not carriers. No fever, no symptoms, no known, exposure. Sure, you may be one of the "incubating asymptomatic" but you are more likely to be someone that is not a danger to anyone and can safely gather and deliver groceries -- and thereby help minimize exposure of vulnerable people who would otherwise venture out.

Laid off from my day job, night job cashier manager but only 20 hrs a week. Tax return seized by Social Security for an 11 year old "overpayment."

Yeah I'm screwed. My wife is elderly and disabled and a couple nights ago I started to get the sniffles before bed. Woke up feeling like I had broken ribs.

I need a surgery for a benign (probably) tumor on my neck but am avoiding the clinics due to this virus which I think this is my 2nd go around with.

Sixty days tops before conditions deteriorate to the point where I'm going to have to start taking some big chances.

A decent job would prevent that.
