Elizabeth Warren Is Unveiling A 10-Point 'Bill Of Rights' For Essential Workers Urging Higher Wages
Source: Business Insider
Sen. Elizabeth Warren unveiled a 10-point "Bill of Rights" plan for essential workers on Monday urging higher wages and universal sick pay. Joined by Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna in the House, Warren called on Congress to go far beyond the $2.2 trillion coronavirus relief package that was approved by President Trump last month.
Warren said employees deemed essential during the pandemic such as grocery store employees, health workers, and child care providers deserve a range of additional benefits to protect their health and wellbeing. "Frontline workers are risking their lives to keep America running," Warren said in a tweet. "We can't rely on big business to protect them."
The plan would compel employers to provide protective gear to their workers and notify those who may have been exposed to an infected colleague. It would also provide essential workers access to free healthcare and implement protections for whistleblowers who shed light on unsafe working conditions.
The proposal also calls for Congress to implement 14 days of paid sick leave and up to 12 weeks of family and medical leave for essential workers as well as "robust premium pay" that's retroactive from the beginning of the pandemic...

(67,782 posts)According to the NY Times:
"The coalescence behind Mr. Biden will gain even more strength with the backing of Senator Elizabeth Warren, who is expected to endorse him soon, according to people familiar with the matter. There is not any holdup or demand for concessions for her support, these people said. Ms. Warren is the only major former rival yet to endorse the former vice president, though only because she has left the timing of an announcement up to Mr. Bidens team."

(112,204 posts)For those who have been furloughed or laid off, this might read more like an extortion demand. It's going to be difficult to get a lot of sympathy from the public when the unemployment rate is over 10% and people are looking for jobs or when people are taking pay cuts to keep their jobs.

(26,291 posts)So, to get that I would rather the focus shift to increasing the taxes on companies and corporations that have more than 50 employees 19 or older (franchises would count regardless of the store or restaurant staff size as corporations will try to exploit that to escape paying their taxes) to say 65%.
Then make it so the only way the company can lower that amount is by increasing their workers (19 or older) wages to 400% or higher than the official federal or local poverty level whichever is higher.
The higher the % of their staff that earns that much the lower their taxes and it can go as low as 0% provided they have 100% of their staff earning that.
As for the companies trying to hire only younger people rather than older ones to prevent that simply limit the number of hours those under 18 can work to 6 hours a week and if they work longer than that then they qualify as adult workers for the purposes of the company being taxed so the companies taxes will go up.

(11,885 posts)Representing the American people , and putting them and their welfare first. Having a plan shows her competence , while refusing to show any plan by trump shows his dangerous incompetence. She's an example of Profiles in Courage for our country.

(9,114 posts)They HAVE to keep going to work, coz they're so essential. They're like first responders, key infrastructure, have all the obligations and responsibility, but get none of the respect or support.
