Louisiana pastor who defied covid-19 orders is asking people to give their stimulus money to church
Source: CNN
A Louisiana pastor who defied state orders and repeatedly held large church services during the coronavirus pandemic is now asking congregants to donate their stimulus checks to the church.
Pastor Tony Spell launched what he called the #PastorSpellStimulusChallenge, asking Americans to donate their government stimulus checks to evangelists, missionaries and music ministers who he said have not received offerings in over a month. He said he, his wife and his son have all donated their checks, and added that those without a church can donate through his website.
Asked by CNN's Victor Blackwell on Sunday why he is asking "people who you know don't have much" to hand over their $1,200 stimulus checks, Spell said it was because some evangelists and missionaries don't receive stimulus money.
"We are challenging you, if you can, give your stimulus package to evangelists and missionaries, who do not get the stimulus package," he told CNN Sunday.

(8,200 posts)I am not anti-religion, however, I really despise the charlatans who dominate it. It is unfortunate that they are allowed to exploit the less discerning who are basically good hearted people who truly have real compassion for the less fortunate and often can ill afford to be played for suckers by these unscrupulous scum. It runs the entire spectrum from sexual exploitation of the innocent to bilking of the aged. I watched this particular man of the cloth on TV and I was truly amazed just how much he looked the part of the typical confidence man with his slicked back pompadour oily hair and obviously phony act of compassion.

(12,712 posts)Who don't even bother to check their "operating manual" are really following something rather heretical in itself, just as the Evangelical fundamentalists tend to do more and more. They seem to be the P.T. Barnum faction of Xtianity.
I am not anti-religious, (there are many, many kinds, not just Western Abrahamic) but, I have seen that fundamentalism in general is the real problem and that leads to all kinds of strange bedfellows for the confused from Jihads to a Corporate/military Christ.
From there own "good book". One problem is that gullibility leads to putting faith into facades and I doubt then that it occurs to them that they are commanded to be vigilant and test for deceivers among them. That is especially a problem with modern, American McReligion that is so fused to consumerism and spiritual egotism, xenophobia and the rest.
The Bible has many indictments towards those kinds of people, so it is not like the big bucks, carnival barking televangelist, et al, was not "prophesied". I also find it disappointing that they are not being called out more often by the Xtians who understand this, but then, those fundamentalists can be very vengeful, cruel and vociferous since they also align with political agendas, etc. And that agenda and its theocratic leanings, (which is fundamentally anti-democratic) is what is most worrying.
Their are at least thirty or more of warnings like this:
Matthew 7:15-16
Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheeps clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they?"
Jeremiah 14:14
Then the Lord said to me, The prophets are prophesying falsehood in My name. I have neither sent them nor commanded them nor spoken to them; they are prophesying to you a false vision, divination, futility and the deception of their own minds.
Ezekiel 22:28
Her prophets have smeared whitewash for them, seeing false visions and divining lies for them, saying, Thus says the Lord God, when the Lord has not spoken.
1 Kings 22:21-22
Then a spirit came forward and stood before the Lord and said, I will entice him. The Lord said to him, How? And he said, I will go out and be a deceiving spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. Then He said, You are to entice him and also prevail. Go and do so.
2 Corinthians 11:13-15
For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds.
And so forth...

(19,204 posts)the right's demi-god, Donald Trump, gave them $1200 each of his own money, but that must have been squandered on food, bills, and mortgages. The nerve! Maybe demi-god Donald will give them another check of his own money soon, and they can donate that one to the poor religious leaders who god has forsaken.
I realize it's not Trump's money, but he demanded that his name be put on the checks. That's how much of an asshole he is.
