Birx says deaths will be 'dramatically decreased' by end of May, criticizes media coverage as 'very
Source: Washington Post
Deborah Birx, the response coordinator for the White Houses coronavirus task force, said on Saturday night that she expects the number of coronavirus deaths in the United States to go way down by the end of next month.
We believe that both hospitalizations, the ICU need and frankly, the number of people who have succumbed to this disease, will be dramatically decreased by the end of May, she said in an interview with Fox News host Jesse Watters.
Birx, one of the nations leading infectious disease experts, said that even though she believes deaths and hospitalizations will decrease, that might not be the situation when it comes to coronavirus cases. She said she thinks increased testing to the general public would find additional cases in people who are either asymptomatic or show very mild symptoms.
Birx also criticized the media coverage in the United States during the pandemic, specifically taking aim at how outlets have framed headlines in their coverage of the public health crisis.
I think the media is very slicey and dicey about how they put sentences together in order to create headlines, said Birx, who was pictured above a chyron that read, Birx: The media isnt always fair.

she's forced, pretty much at gunpoint, to talk to only FOX Noise. Trump loves to intimidate women, and if she's not the type who can handle a demented pig like Trump, she might be getting trod upon by the Orange Idiot. Yes, she could resign in disgust, but some people just don't have the guts to make waves. I'm really not sure what her character is like, whether she's one who flees, or one who fights. If somebody thinks food prep is using a phone app to order something by DoorDash, I can see how the phrase and its meanings would be opaque.
I suspect it was originally "slice or dice"--as in the phrase "no matter how you slice or dice it, ..." (With the humorous '70s disco-based "no matter how you dance, no matter how you prance" doggerel that used to show up on men's bathroom walls having the same sort of semantic "alliteration", if I can use an analogy.)

(12,555 posts)We would have known this much sooner if Trumps administration hadnt screwed up testing. We STILL arent getting tested the way we need to be. In every area where there has been large scale testing, it shows a much higher infection rate, which lowers the death rate. Look at the LA County testing. NY testing. Its far more widespread than we thought. If not for Trumps incompetence, we would have known that many weeks ago. This isnt going away; and any vaccine wont be like the polio vaccine. It will be like the flu vaccine. So we need to focus on the high risk people because they are the most vulnerable. 88% of Covid patients in NYC have had underlying conditions. THATS where we need to focus. Thinking we can just keep everyone home on an open-ended schedule is not realistic and people will reach a point where they'll just stop paying attention to it. I've already seen some folks comment that here on DU. If its happening here, its happening much more elsewhere

(15,286 posts)That is the observable evidence as well. Where I live over 2/3rds of the cases are centered around 1 large nursing home facility. With limited current tracking of cases by race/ethnicity, it's hard to know exactly, but there have been no reports of outbreaks centered around apartment buildings even ones catering to seniors or in low income housing.
There's also new evidence supporting your statement that people are going out more and staying home less.
There is also no doubt that Trump/administrations ignoring the warnings and being completely unprepared to do testing created a bigger crisis than it probably needed to be.

(12,555 posts)Trumps incompetence aside, the current data shows that the death rate IS far lower than we thought. It also shows a spread rate far HIGHER than we thought. We should have know ALL that earlier, but for trumps idiocy we didnt. But the fact also is that we cannot and will not remain semi-shut down until a vaccine is developed. And again, a vaccine for Covid will be much like the flu vaccine; it doesnt mean you wont get it. We're just going to have to realize that the most vulnerable need to be protected by continuing to semi-quarantine. And adopting measures that probably would've been a good idea to be doing anyway.

AllyCat
(16,189 posts)Are you saying 45 is using this as a weapon against us?
Im not saying Trump used a bio weapon against us.
Im saying that the virus is acting just like a biological weapon- that its characteristics are very much like a biological weapon, if the Chinese had been working on such a weapon, it would likely have characteristics like this-
1. Extremely contagious
2. Attacks in ways not easily understood- such as the unusual affects on blood coagulation. There is a whole class of chemical weapons that are designed to do a similar thing- blood agents, that affect the blood and cause it either to coagulate in the victims veins; or blood agents may interfere with the absorption of oxygen at the cell level, causing the victim to suffocate, even though they are able to breath. Various cyanyde compounds or related chemicals may also cause similar responses.
This virus has had a number of occasions where its acted like a blood agent, and thats incredibly unusual for a virus. Thats why I say- if somebody wanted to make a biological weapon, it might very well look like this.
3. China is one of the few countries with advanced enough science to produce such a thing if they wanted.
4. Its not fatal to most of those who catch it. It appears that the fatality rate may be lower than initially thought. If it WERE a weapon that was being developed, you wouldnt want something that killed everything it touched- for obvious reasons. Youd only want it to make people sick, so they all resources would have to go to trying to save them. Just like the school of thought that says- in war, if you kill an enemy, there is one less opponent. But if you severely wound him, it takes four others to carry that man off the battlefield, so aim for a leg or a hip, so there will be five less left in the fight.
At this point- there is absolutely ZERO evidence that the diseases is either man-made, or naturally occurring, but altered in a lab by man. But if it were, the properties of this virus would likely be what it might look like.

All these predictions of "It's almost over" are way too optimistic. The isolation measures we've taken have slowed the RATE of growth, not stopped the disease in its tracks. That's a good thing. It will help keep the ICU's from overflowing. But the disease is still spreading. When weak governors give in to pressure and try to re-open their states, flare-ups will occur.
That mostly agrees with what you said. But peaking at 100,000? I think we are ultimately looking at American fatalities in the millions. Not in the next month, but over the next couple of years.
