Trump, Putin talk G-7 plans
Source: The Hill
President Trump on Monday spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin about plans for this year's Group of Seven (G-7) summit, after Trump said over the weekend that he hoped to add Russia and three other nations to the annual meeting.
A White House spokesman said the two leaders discussed progress toward convening the G7. The Kremlin said in a separate statement that Trump told Putin about his idea of inviting Russia, Australia, India and South Korea to the annual G-7 summit, which will be hosted by the U.S.
The G-7 consists of the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom. The four additional nations Trump wants to add are all part of the Group of 20.
Trump has previously suggested it would be appropriate to add Russia to the G-7;
Moscow was expelled from what was then the G-8 over its seizure of Ukraines Crimean Peninsula in 2014.

Trump and Putin also discussed efforts to defeat the novel coronavirus and reopen their respective economies on Monday's call.
President Trump conveyed that the United States is working hard to care for Americans at home and provide assistance to other countries in need, including the donation of 200 ventilators to the Russian people, White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere said.

Last night, as protests convulsed Washington, D.C., the White House went dark. All the lights were off. The windows of the presidents official residence were darkened, and the floodlights outside extinguished.
The country is sick, angry, and divided, but it also finds itself leaderless. Trump has never shown any inclination or ability to soothe or console in moments of crisis. He wants the trappings of power, like showing up for a rocket launch, but he doesnt want to get his hands dirty with the work of governing. And he continues to view himself as the president only of the minority who voted for him, not all Americans. These tendencies have converged in this moment. Yesterday, when America needed real leadership, the office of the president stood darkand vacant.
It is not that Trump has been silent. Far from it: His Twitter feed has been a supercharged version of its normal self. Trump has attacked Joe Biden, slurred reporters, insulted leaders on the front lines of protests, and claimed federal authority he doesnt have. This is the sort of behavior wed call unhinged from any other president, but the word has lost any power through its endless, justified invocation throughout his tenure. In any case, the tweeting suggests a president flailing around for a message that sticks and for a sense of control.
During a teleconference Monday, Trump derided governors as weak in their response to protests, but he has cowered out of view, dithering about what to do except for armchair-quarterbacking those who are trying. As my colleague Peter Nicholas notes, even Richard Nixon went to speak with antiVietnam War protesters in 1970, trying to convey that he heard their complaints. Its hard to imagine Trump doing something like that, because he has shown no interest in being perceived as caring about what his critics believe.

Its hard to imagine Trump doing something like that because he's a lily-livered coward. We'll just have to see what Puppetmaster Putin instructs him to do.
