Just as Seattles mayor and police chief were wrapping up a Sunday night news conference about ongoing protests against police brutality, a 27-year-old man at a demonstration on Capitol Hill was shot by a gunman who drove into the crowd.
The victim was taken to Harborview Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition, and the gunman was detained.
The shooting occurred shortly before 8:30 p.m., near the intersection of Eleventh Avenue and Pine Street where demonstrators have gathered repeatedly in the past week to protest police killings of Black people, including George Floyd in Minneapolis last month.
The shooting apparently happened while the gunman was still in the car. Dressed in blue jeans, a black sweatshirt and a black baseball cap, he then got out of his car, gun in hand, and made his way through demonstrators toward a line of police before he was taken into custody.

(1,968 posts)What's difference between this and the guy who ran those bikers down in NYC along the Hudson a few years ago?

(343 posts)There was probably supposed to be less distance between his, fresh out of the impound, car and his fellow police officers.
If his intent was to shoot to kill people he certainly had plenty of opportunity to do so.
Looking forward to seeing where this goes. I suspect actually shooting someone was not part of the plan.
Or, I'm totally wrong.

Can't tell if the man was punching the driver or not.

(296 posts)The Driver used his vehicle to assault a group of people. The gun shot victim had a right to self-defense by trying to stop the driver!

(33,345 posts)"King County Department of Public Defense attorney Jesse Dubow argued that Fernandez was on his way to work at the Nike store downtown, where hed been recently hired to provide security, and got caught going the wrong way down a one-way street. He said Fernandez was operating out of fear of the protesters, who he thought were trying to jack his car, and his mental state was protective of himself.
Dubow said that Fernandez, a member of the Iron Workers Union, lived with his wife in Mount Lake Terrace and was not familiar with downtown Seattle.
Dollars to donuts, he's apolitical. He probably had no clue what he drove into. so when someone reached in to his car to stop him, he used his gun.
Stupidity and Firearms. It's the American Way!

Lots of Hispanics in The Proud Boys, etc.
I'm not saying this guy is or isn't, I don't know, but being a Hispanic doesn't mean he doesn't mean he doesn't look white, because that's how that works.
And wtf does being a union member have to do with anything???

(3,051 posts)First off, the driver was Hispanic, and quite dark-skinned.
Second, he was going to work, not trying to cause trouble. He was armed because that is his job as a security guard.
Third, protestors blocked off his car, and then began attacking the car. One reached into the car and punched him in the face.
Fourth, the driver shot the man who was attacking him.
Sorry, but this is pretty clear cut. It's all on video.

(25 posts)The handgun also had a second magazine taped upside down to the first one that was loaded into the firearm. That is not something that is "normal" for a security guard. It is something you see on movies for someone who is going to shoot a LOT.
