New York moves to require body cams for troopers, ban chokeholds

Source: Albany Times-Union

ALBANY — The state Legislature has proposed a series of sweeping criminal justice reforms that are expected to be voted on this week, including requiring state troopers to wear body cameras, creating a special unit within the attorney general's office to investigate police misconduct and repealing a 44-year-old statute that has blocked public access to police officers' disciplinary records.

Other measures in the package of bills include banning racial and ethnic profiling by police, ensuring people in police custody receive prompt medical care, and requiring courts to "maintain and report records concerning arrests and court proceedings involving low-level offenses such as violations and traffic offenses," including information on "race, ethnicity and sex."

Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said New Yorkers of color deserve to know that their rights and lives are "valued and protected by our justice system."

“The Senate is stepping up to advance reforms that will empower New Yorkers, improve transparency, and help save lives. I thank our colleagues in the State Assembly, and my partner in legislative leadership, Speaker Carl Heastie, for undertaking these historic measures to help move New York state forward," she said in a news release Monday. "The legislation that will be passed over the coming days will help stop bad actors and send a clear message that brutality, racism, and unjustified killings will not be tolerated.”

ALL the police departments need to be restructured. I don't mind a union that looks out for the interests of their members....but police unions are more like mob bosses than any other unions I can think of. They are protecting criminals...and that is a bridge too far.

"Police reform" needs to be on the Democratic agenda ASAP! Watching the police perform across the country at these protests is alarming. More like fascist thugs than actual "serve and protect" civil servants. The whole fucking tree is rotten, not just a few bad apples.
