Pompeo refuses to answer to Congress -- and Senate GOP is letting him get away with it

Source: American Independent

By Dan Desai Martin -June 8, 2020 2:00 PM

Pompeo would likely be asked about the recent firing of the State Department inspector general.

On Friday, Sen. Jim Risch (R-ID), chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, announced that he is giving up efforts to push Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to testify at a routine hearing on his department's budget.

The committee had been working for the past four months to get Pompeo to testify on the 2021 budget. During such hearings with Cabinet officials on their respective departments, they are often asked about a wide range of issues in addition to budgets.

In a call with other GOP members of the committee, a Risch staffer said he was focused on preserving "political capital" with the administration, according to sources cited by Politico. In a recent change, senior Cabinet officials reportedly must obtain permission from White House chief of staff Mark Meadows in order to testify before Congress.

The last time Pompeo testified before the committee was in April 2019.

Pompeo's refusal to be held accountable is in stark contrast to his demands for accountability of the Obama administration when he was a member of Congress, especially regarding the 2012 Benghazi attack.

In September 2012, a terrorist group attacked the U.S. embassy in Benghazi, Libya, and killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens. Republicans launched an investigation into the attack, which Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) admitted at the time was meant to politically damage then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

During the congressional investigation into the events, Pompeo pressured the State Department to release more information and publicly attacked the Obama administration as "deeply obstructive of getting the American people the facts that they needed."

Five years ago, Pompeo complained that Congress was "stonewalled by the State Department and by former Secretary Clinton."

"[We] now have an obligation to complete the record," he said at the time.

one of the first priorities of a Democratic Senate should be to develop a mechanism whereby people who ignore Senate subpoenas can be arrested. That would make over half the GOP shit their pants.

let's make sure that the House Committees can get a response regarding their requests for information or participation in congressional investigations.
Just pizzes me off that SO MANY of those that were subpoenaed for the Impeachment hearings just thumbed their noses and stayed away. Of course, I must add that I'm equally pizzed that the Repugs on the committees and in the House allowed that to take place, thus throwing away their right to provide balance between the 3 branches of our government.

you look back to see how congress handled the Watergate/Nixon mess. Honorable Congressmen on both sides of the aisle taking their oath and duties seriously and doing what the Constitution required regarding the separation of powers between the 3 branches of the federal government.
GAWD, all of these RepubliCons should be taken out and face the Trump/Barr squad that saves the nation's capital from those dreadful peaceful demonstrators.

If a single Obama administration member responds to a single Leslie Graham subpoena under his newest investigation of FBI Russian inquiry, we should all be screaming like hell. Throw these criminals the into GITMO. Arrogant thugs. Anyone think Barr did not send some of HIS personal special police force in to assassinate Epstein. He obviously has special ties and power to put prison police anywhere he wants. Barr and PompousAhole need to share a cell, then a wall for the ultimate treason punishment, as per the constitution.

My faith in American democracy will have been shattered.

Forget the "Look forward, not backward" stupidity of the past.

If we don't hold them accountable, they will continue to cheat the system and CHEAT US of justice. Can't let them claim to be all law and order and then work 24/7 to subvert justice.

I want them all to go to prison as a lesson to future ratfuckers.
