Republican 'law and order' appeal prompts U.S. #IAmASuburbanMom backlash

(Reuters, 8 hrs. ago) - When a senior Republican state lawmaker demanded that Minnesota's Democratic governor apologize to "moms out in the suburbs scared to death" about protests over racism and police brutality, Jamie Becker-Finn responded on Twitter with the "#IAmASuburbanMom" hashtag.
I don't need an apology," Becker-Finn, a Democratic member of the state House of Representatives and a mother from the Minneapolis suburb of Roseville, wrote in response to Minnesota Senate Republican leader Paul Gazelka's comment last Friday. "I need the GOP Senate to be more than just sad and sorry that George Floyd was killed by police," Becker-Finn added, using shorthand for the Republican Party.
Tens of thousands of people have since taken to Twitter with the hashtag, saying they are suburban women standing with protesters over the death of Floyd, a black man, after a white police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes in Minneapolis last month.
President Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans are trying to win back suburban voters around the United States with promises to impose "law and order," aiming in particular to appeal to women who have drifted away from the party since he took office in 2017. It may be an uphill battle...

(9,988 posts)Children may not watch as much political news as adults, but theyre on the Internet, they see local news, and they do observe how Trump behaves. Several of the children in my family certainly know some of the horrid things Trump says and does, and their parents do not watch television or have family discussions about Trumps behavior.
I suspect a lot of suburban moms who voted for Trump in 2016 arent happy with him as a role model for their children. Whether that results in votes for Biden remains to be seen. A lot of them also believe that Republicans do a better job on the economya total myth, but people believe it nonetheless.

(41,132 posts)ones, not destructive vile populations fueled by venom, rage and ignorance. Madness and carnage has to end and overhauling defective systems and creating better ones must commence for this country to pull back from the abyss.
We need unity and spirit like these brave women fighting back, let it continue to build, it's urgent.
