(8 hrs. ago) RICHMOND - Protesters tore down another Confederate statue in Virginia's state capital on Tuesday, the third such monument to be toppled in recent weeks.
Shortly after 11 p.m., demonstrators climbed on the Richmond Howitzers Monument near Virginia Commonwealth University. Protesters pulled the figure from its pedestal before dispersing.
The monument, unveiled in 1892, honors an artillery unit that served in the Civil War. It stood near Park Avenue and Harrison Street by VCU's Monroe Park campus.
Earlier this month, protesters brought down two other statues in the city honoring Confederate figures.
The toppling of the Howitzers Monument came hours into an evening demonstration that drew hundreds of protesters downtown. Earlier Tuesday, Mayor Levar Stoney ousted Police Chief William Smith after two nights of tense demonstrations outside police headquarters that involved the use of chemical gas and rubber bullets...
