Californians must wear face masks in public under coronavirus order issued by Newsom
Source: Los Angeles Times
SACRAMENTO Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday ordered all Californians to wear face coverings while in public or high-risk settings, including when shopping, taking public transit or seeking medical care, following growing concerns that an increase in coronavirus cases has been caused by residents failing to voluntarily take that precaution.
Newsoms order comes a week after Orange County rescinded a requirement for residents to wear masks and as other counties across California are debating whether to join other local jurisdictions in mandating face coverings. The Newsom administration did not address how the new requirement will be enforced or if Californians who violate the order will be subject to citations or other penalties.
Simply put, we are seeing too many people with faces uncovered putting at risk the real progress we have made in fighting the disease, Newsom said in a statement. Californias strategy to restart the economy and get people back to work will only be successful if people act safely and follow health recommendations. That means wearing a face covering, washing your hands and practicing physical distancing.
Until now, state public health officials had only recommended that Californians wear the face coverings which, if worn by someone with the virus, have been shown to decease chances of spreading it to others. The Sacramento Bee on Wednesday first reported that the Newsom administration was considering a statewide face covering requirement.

I think we need celebrities to film public service announcements proclaiming the need to wear masks, socially distance, wash hands, etc. etc. There is no outreach with the message.

(19,204 posts)Governor Cuomo has had this mandate in New York for months now. In the beginning there were very few who didn't wear them. Now, every time I go to the store I see fewer and fewer people wearing masks. There are big signs at the entrance of the stores that people are required by NYS mandate to wear face protection. There are smaller signs throughout the stores, along with hand sanitizing stations throughout, but I'd say it's up to about 25% (or more) of people not wearing any sort of face covering whatsoever. I asked several store employees about this, and they said they weren't allowed to confront customers about their lack of compliance. As an aside, these non-compliers look like Trump humpers, but that's only my own prejudices talking there.
So what good is a mandate if no one is enforcing it? You ask the right question, CaliforniaPeggy.

(7,465 posts)"The state mandate exempts children 2 years old and under and people with a medical, mental health or developmental disability that prevents them from wearing a face covering. Restaurant customers are also exempt when eating and drinking, as are residents recreating outdoors as long as they are able to socially distance from others.
Face coverings also are not required for the hearing impaired, or those communicating with them, or for workers whose health may be put at risk or may need to temporarily remove a mask to perform a task or service."
Uh huh...gonna be a helluva lot of people who suddenly became disabled or "hearing-impaired"

In phase 3 (green) stage of re-opening, masks for consumers are optional although businesses can continue to require them for entry/service and masks are mandatory for employees.

It's been scary since memorial day and I am watching our numbers climb here as well
until people are dropping on the street, this is not seen as an actual medical emergency
I'm trying to limit my outings as well. but just dont have the $$ to get week's worth of groceries, and I also can't do the curbside cuz that store is super expensive...

(7,819 posts)And almost no one is wearing masks at the beach, going to the beach, walking around town, hiking on trails, etc. I believe it's fine not to wear a mask when no one is around and you're walking in your neighborhood or on a trail. But I see mostly youngsters still congregating at crosswalks, hanging in groups, getting out of cars together unmasked, etc..
I think this will catch up to them and us sooner or later.
And a LOT of them are going to the beach or coast towns since theaters are closed, malls until recently were closed, jobs are more scarce, in person school isn't happening, etc. It's been VERY crowded along the coast, more traffic than normal summertime.
In general on the sidewalks and streets, Laguna seems to have a noticeably higher percentage wearing masks but still not a majority.

It will help to recoup the financial losses in the state and help public education stay safe.
"Kate Folmar, a spokeswoman for the California Health and Human Services agency, said violating the order could bring a misdemeanor charge, a fine, or other penalties, or that California's Division of Occupational Safety and Health could take action against businesses."
