Florida sets another single-day coronavirus case record with nearly 4,000 infections
Source: Tampa Bay Times
Florida again broke its record for single-day coronavirus cases, adding 3,822 infections Friday and bringing the state total to 89,748 cases.
The state also recorded 43 new deaths and 200 additional hospitalizations. In Tampa Bay, Hillsborough and Pinellas County set new records for single-day recorded cases, adding 372 cases and 266 cases respectively.
In the past week, Florida has repeatedly hit new highs for single-day coronavirus cases. Friday was the 17th consecutive day with caseloads more than 1,000.
About a quarter of Floridas total coronavirus cases have been recorded since June 11, when the state had the highest single-day number of new cases since April.

Needless to say, DeSantis sees no reason to interrupt re-opening.

(23,547 posts)We are testing just as much here in Illinois and we have gone down to 500 to 600 new cases per day. Our highest was at 4000 per day one day over a month ago. Our business rules are science based and we are slowly opening. Fingers crossed.

(10,500 posts)What if it does have a positive impact in diminishing the virus? What if there are other factors that are so bad that the virus is spreading in spite of the advantages of Summer? That means that when those benefits go away in the Fall the number of people contracting Covid 19 will explode.

Arizona, Florida, California, South Carolina and Texas all reported record-high single-day increases in coronavirus cases on Thursday as states continue to ramp up testing and the virus reaches new communities.
Arizona health officials reported 2,519 confirmed cases on Thursday, surpassing the previous single-day high of 2,392 reported on Tuesday. Florida officials announced 3,207 new cases Thursday morning, shattering the states previous single-day high of 2,783 new cases also reported on Tuesday. California officials reported Thursday 4,084 new cases that were confirmed on Wednesday.
Spreading like wildfire.

Most of Californias new cases came from Los Angeles County, which reported 2,115. The state added that the single-day record was fueled by 600 positive test results that came in from an earlier testing period.
At a news briefing on Monday, Newsom attributed the rise in overall cases to increased testing. He added that the percent of people testing positive has remained stable at around 4.5% for more than a month.
I had heard this during Newsom's press conference so I wanted to make sure others are aware.

(2,032 posts)I haven't seen it yet.
The county I live in has avoided it mostly avoided a spike until recently. With the loosening, it's kinda popped a bit (almost all in the redder parts of the county).
Of course I don't know what to think when I read this:
Coronavirus cases down as Californians must wear face masks in public
One day after a record spike in coronavirus cases, Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday mandated that all Californians are required to wear face masks in public.

I'm wondering if he's being pro-active in the requirement with more and more counties opening up and before everything opens up.
They may have expected to see a better reduction by now and are doing this instead of closing things down again.

(1,979 posts)My daughter in-law's sister and her boyfriend just tested positive. She has no sense of smell or taste right now and they are both having respiratory issues (they are both late 30's). She is in the healthcare field, and his office had an outbreak with almost everyone now positive. She has two small children. Her mother takes care of the kids and she was over here every day last week (I live with my son and daughter in law). So if she was exposed, I guess so am I.
We are in a suburb of Orlando where, as I predicted last week, the Memorial Day Idiots who didn't wear masks and decided to go to the beach, the bars, and restaurants have created the highest number of daily cases yet.
Anyone who thinks that this virus is going away needs to have their heads examined. The thing just took a short break BECAUSE people were quarantined and masked. Nobody should let their guard down until late fall, or a vaccine is developed.
