Navy won't reinstate coronavirus-hit carrier captain, puts admiral's promotion on hold
Source: Reuters
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Navy will not reinstate Captain Brett Crozier after finding fault with his response to the outbreak of the coronavirus aboard the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt and is also putting an admirals promotion on hold, sources told Reuters on Friday.
The decisions, first reported by Reuters, are expected to be announced later on Friday at a news conference by the Navys top leaders.
Crozier was hailed by his crew as a hero for risking his job by writing a letter that leaked calling on the Navy for greater safeguards for his crew. A previous Navy investigation had recommended reinstating him.
But a more in-depth probe, the results of which will be disclosed at least in part on Friday, are expected to detail concerns about his response to the virus, the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Reuters. It was unclear whether that would include his failure to address those concerns through proper channels.

(2,227 posts)that he will accept their resignations, by noon. No discussion.
He should also add that ANY military officer of any branch of service, that "caved" and carried out suspect orders under pressure from the previous president, can expect a similar notification, and they should start to prepare for that eventuality.
Then actually do it.
Military officers are advisers to the president, and are expected to do just that, ADVISE, not bend, throw their moral center out the window, and cave to a capricious, vindictive president. They also have to be able to say NO.
Doing the dirty work for someone else has already established that the action in question, is itself questionable. They should have made the president do it himself. At least they can say they advised that the action not be done, and wouldn't themselves be tainted by the president's own actions.
This can't be done? Yes, it can.
New Rules, Baby.

(3,192 posts)They have to follow orders unless they're expressly illegal. No officer has a "right" to his position, and in theory can be removed from or denied command at the President's discretion. Is it shitty in this case? Absolutely. Does it fall under the exception in the UCMJ which would allow them to disobey the order? Doubtful.
They can advise against it all they want, but if the President says "remove him from command" or "don't give him back his command" they really don't have a choice. I suppose they could resign in protest, but all that'd do is get their spot filled by a sycophant.
