NASCAR releases photo of noose in Bubba Wallace's garage
Source: NY Daily News
NASCAR said Thursday that its examination of the Talladega racetrack showed only one noose, which was found in the garage of black driver Bubba Wallaces garage.
The noose was first reported Sunday after Wallace spoke out against the prominence of the Confederate flag at his races and NASCAR launched an investigation. By Tuesday, the FBI claimed that the noose had been in the garage since October.
NASCAR said Thursday that its own investigation had looked at 1684 garage stalls across 29 racetracks and found 11 ropes with a pulldown rope tied in a knot. Only one, the one found in Wallaces stall, was fashioned into a noose.
Anyone who would suggest this was a hoax, I find personally offensive, president Steve Phelps said. I dont know how people think that way.
The noose was real, as was our concern for Bubba. . . .

Looks like a freakin' noose to me. I wonder if Tucker Carlson and others of his ilk will apologize? Nah. . .

(11,361 posts)However, this is something quite different. And deliberate. You don't achieve this type of knot without effort -- and intent. And it is not likely (or ever) mistaken for anything other than what it is.

(10,779 posts)A noose is a slip knot which would tighten on your hand if you used it for that purpose.

(1,954 posts)Worked and visited tons of garages, never seen a pull like that. While there may be some validity behind the noose being there before Wallace moved into the garage, it's still an abhorrent thing to have dangling about anywhere, regardless of the presence of a black person. Glad NASCAR's sticking to their guns and condemning this, along with the general support Wallace has received from the NASCAR crews.

(86,777 posts)Any kind of simple knot would have served the purpose of a grip for the rope.
Not buying the FBI story which was probably edited by bullybarr.

(22,671 posts)Why hadn't anyone removed it, notified the black driver that his garage has the added bonus of a noose in it???
No, the noose was put there. I imagine when it's discovered who put it there, it'll be crystal clear what the intention was.

Its like the light near my computer..............its not very bright and I know I could replace it with a brighter led one that would use less power but since it does the job well enough its not high on my list of things to do.
Now what is higher on that list is saving up for a decent computer chair before the wood chair from the dining room I borrowed kills me.

I'm still not buying the FBI's conclusion that it's just a door pull. Something's fishy. After all, many aren't pleased that Nascar banned the traitor flag.
stopdiggin
(11,361 posts)they said not a "hate crime" because it did not specifically target Wallace. The FBI in fact calls the knot in question a noose.

(25,979 posts)to determine garage assignments. I dont know many garages there are, but odds dont favor Bubba Wallace getting the only noose in the bunch. Its assignment was deliberate IMO.

(25,183 posts)the fact that the FBI figured out that this so-called noose had been in place WAY ahead of Bubba Wallace's arrival?

Devil Child
(2,728 posts)customerserviceguy
(25,183 posts)is the fact that FBI investigators could not find any person who would have done this as an attempted hate crime, and that the other drivers were massively in support of Wallace the other day. That's big, but for people who look down their noses at people who are connected to NASCAR, it doesn't fit their narrative of "rednecks are all deplorables".

(25,183 posts)perpetrated by someone with intent to intimidate is indeed a hate crime. I believe this is just a way to bring a garage door down. The FBI figured that out, too.

(36,885 posts)If you don't think hanging a noose is a hate crime... well, that says a lot about you.
Bubba said of all the garages he has ever been to, he has never seen such a pull. Ever.

(21,110 posts)This was a racial statement. PERIOD. No matter the time frame. It was wrong to hang THAT NOOSE anywhere.
To try and explain it away as JUST A KNOT is so farking wrong.
customerserviceguy
(25,183 posts)seem to have an interest in seeing this as something sinister. I'm just glad that the NASCAR driver community rallied behind Bubba Wallace in the public way that they did. Maybe if it was an attempted hate crime, their action will let the next perpetrator know that he won't be tolerated in the sport. I choose to see that as progress.

(25,183 posts)it depends on intent. If some brilliant detective can find the person who tied the rope into that shape, and establish a racist motive, then we've got an alleged hate crime on our hands. Still, I'd give the accused a fair trial, some would opt for execution on the spot.

(329 posts)Its hangmans noose designed to break a neck, period! All the other garage pulls were slipknots. Some asshole might have tied it that way just joking in 19. The question is why did they assign that particular garage to the only Black driver!

(65,168 posts)From ESPN crawl.
NASCAR screened 1,648 garages used by their teams at many tracks.
They found ELEVEN doors with a pull rope. One in 150.
IOW, these teams barely use pull ropes. They're clearly not very important.
And then ONE of 11 was fashioned as a noose. And that's the garage Wallace gets assigned.
And, it's all coincidence?
Strains credulity.
George II
(67,782 posts)...said earlier in the week it wasn't a hate crime. That rope from November 2019 isn't the same one as the one just released. The November rope has a much smaller loop and the knot his shorter. Glad the REAL picture came out today!
George II
(67,782 posts)It's much thinner rope and the knot is much smaller.
Sapient Donkey
(1,568 posts)When I saw those older pictures it looked like that could easily not be a noose and just a knot that someone mistook as being a noose. They do look different, but there is another old picture that looks more like a noose. So I don't know.
*found them*
Either way, no doubt it's a noose and totally understandable why it raised concerns.
stopdiggin
(11,361 posts)that this pull had been in existence for some time (until I see some substantial proof otherwise). Not sure if that really makes any difference. I think that the fact that this kind of "equipment" is lurking around Talladega facilities (no matter who the target/audience) speaks to an intentional racist message and intent.
These types of "knots" do not just happen by themselves.

(1,568 posts)I fully understand why someone would react the way they did. Sure maybe it could have been handled more discretely until it was confirmed it wasn't newly added, but we say that with 20/20 hindsight. People who claim it was an intentional hoax are jackasses.
