US warns European governments against supporting Palestinians at UN
Source: The Guardian
The United States has warned European governments against supporting a Palestinian bid for enhanced status at the United Nations, saying such a move "would be extremely counterproductive" and threatening "significant negative consequences" for the Palestinian Authority, including financial sanctions.
A US memorandum, seen by the Guardian, said Palestinian statehood "can only be achieved via direct negotiations with the Israelis" and urged European governments "to support [American] efforts" to block the bid. The message was communicated by officials to representatives of European governments at the UN general assembly (UNGA) in New York last week.
......................................................
The memorandum described by one diplomatic source as "private correspondence" said the US was continuing to work for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and urged both parties "to avoid provocative one-sided actions that could undermine trust or otherwise distract from the pursuit of peace".
A Palestinian resolution on non-member state status "would have significant negative consequences, for the peace process itself, for the UN system, as well as our ability to maintain our significant financial support for the Palestinian Authority".

(163 posts)This attitude that we are the only ones with the ability to broker in this situation is just crap. This situation has not improved but has deteriorated over time. Might be a good idea to shine a little light as to why it has stayed the same all these years. Until we can be fair to all sides we best stay out.

As I see it, nothing has worked so far. The Palestinians land and rights are not moving in a direction favorable to them. The longer this situation remains the same, the more they lose.

(3,829 posts)Forcing the Palestinians to negotiate for their freedom is a sickening to watch. It's also against international law. The US always makes sure the Palestinians remain enslaved.
The only thing that needs negotiated is their reparations.
American bully tactics at play again.
If you want freedom, negotiate with your captor, please point me to an example where that has worked.

(45,850 posts)you see last year when Congress saw fit to cut off the Palestinians due to their UN bid then, part of that money was re-instated at Israel's request, because there is a good deal of coordination between Israeli security and PA security in the West Bank, so much that Israel went to the IMF on the PA's behalf to attempt to gain more funding for them

but by conundrum I meant definition B "an intricate and difficult problem" as it seems to be just that

(27,137 posts)I didn't even notice that Timberwolves shirt! As for the intractability of the problems there, I think that if the people of the two countries were deciding things, the issue could be over in a heartbeat.

(569 posts)It's Israel & Co telling the US what to tell the EU to do. It looks better and has a much stronger impact.
We are being manipulated and controlled by the same extreme zionist 'elements' that have brought us into this post-9/11 era. Questioning their right to carry on as such is tantamount to being excluded from further participation.

(163 posts)All Presidents and elected officials in the United States are scared of the Zionist power that carries great influence . One has only to,look around and see how the discussion over Palestine is framed by A media that favors a Zionist perspective. Sure one can find sympathetic views toward Palestinians in the minimized leftist press. Some will say I am biased ,however one just needs to observe who gets the last word and its not the Palestinians. If they had an equal voice we would be hearing repeatedly about the genocide of Palestinians, the theft of the Paestinian homeland by Zionist colonialists. We rarely hear about the suffering of the Palestinians. And for that matter we rarely hear about the genocides visited upon so many other ethnic groups such as the Armenians,Bosnians ect. We are reminded of the sufferings of Jewish people almost on a daily bases. If the Armenians held any sway over media we would hear about the Turks murderous attacks upon them but few people know of it.
