Pennsylvania Voter ID: Retired Nuns Criticize Law As 'Very Unkind'

A group of retired Pennsylvania nuns has criticized the state's contested voter identification law as "unkind, unfair and ridiculous" because of the hardships it imposes on senior citizens.
The nuns, who reside at the Our Lady of Peace Center in Scranton, told the Scranton Times-Tribune that they received help obtaining identification cards they'll need to vote. But some seniors may not get help and as a result, may be unable to vote. One of the nuns called the law "very, very unkind, unfair and ridiculous."
The comments come as a state judge is set to rule Tuesday on the law, signed by Gov. Tom Corbett (R) in March.

One of the acceptable forms of identification is a card issued by a care facility, but because Our Lady of Peace is not licensed by the state, the cards are not valid, said Sister Eleanor Mary Marconi, I.H.M., assistant administrator at OLP.

Some political momentum could be on the line when a judge rules on whether to keep intact Pennsylvania's tough new law requiring voters to show photo identification in next month's presidential election.
Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson is under a state Supreme Court order to rule no later than Tuesday, just five weeks before voters decide whether to re-elect President Barack Obama, a Democrat, or replace him with Mitt Romney, a Republican.
Simpson heard two days of testimony last week and said he was considering invalidating a narrow portion of the law for the Nov. 6 election. An appeal to the state Supreme Court is possible.
Up for grabs are Pennsylvania's valuable 20 electoral votes, the sixth most. For now, Republican candidates are trailing in polls on the state's top-of-the-ticket races.

(81,314 posts)The nuns have always had their hands in the dirt while the male hierarchy live like dukes and princes. The nuns are the ones out there in the trenches and on the front lines doing the hard work while the bishops and cardinals were safely in the rear, leading from behind where they don't have to get their hands dirty (discounting the molesters of course, who have true FILTH and SIN on their hands). The nuns are where the rubber meets the road as far as doing the work of the Lord.

(129,096 posts)and allow rethug votes without ID while enforcing the law in Dem areas. They keep saying that the older demographic supposedly supports rethugs, but this law impacts older voters more than some of the other groups that they had targeted for the law. It seems the memo didn't reach older rethug voters who may just give up themselves.
