Obama Leads Romney by 18 Points Among Women

Source: Bloomberg

President Barack Obama has an 18- percentage-point lead over Republican challenger Mitt Romney among women voters in a poll released today, an advantage similar to his pre-election margins four years ago.

Thanks to Obama’s support among women, the survey of likely voters by Quinnipiac University shows the incumbent holding a 49 percent to 45 percent edge over Romney. Obama leads by 56 percent to 38 percent among women. Romney leads among men, 52 percent to 42 percent. Independent voters are divided, with 47 percent backing Romney and 45 percent Obama, within a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points.

Obama was favored similarly among women four years ago, while Romney is faring better among men than the 2008 Republican nominee, Arizona Senator John McCain, polls showed.

Quinnipiac showed Obama with a 14-point lead, 54 percent to 40 percent, among likely women voters in a Sept. 11-16, 2008, poll, as McCain led among men, 50 percent to 43 percent. And a Pew Research Center poll of registered voters taken Sept. 27-29 put Obama ahead among women, 54 percent to 37 percent, while McCain led among men, 47 percent to 43 percent.

Part of white, male gender and race identity appears to be tied up with avoiding candidates who are compassionate rather than "tough," whatever that might mean.

I remember a few people making that comment on here during the convention....and then catching hell for it.

Right now, what the Democrats gained in women, they've lost in men. According to the polls. For whatever reason...

I am not trying to be snarky(I am a man myself), but what do you think Dems should be doing to attract more men? I can't really think of any issues specifically relating to men that we have been neglected on.

White, working class men make up more voters than hispanics and blacks combined. Yet this group tends to be overlooked by Democrats while Republicans target them heavily. And when you compare today's polls to 2008, white men is a place where Obama has lost significant support. And no one really seems to have any idea why, nor does anyone seem to care.

2008 exit polls:
Women - Obama 56% - McCain 43%.
Men - Obama 49% - McCain 48%.

2012 polls right now:
Women - Obama 56% - Romney 38%
Men - Romney 52% - Obama 42%.

No question about it. Obama has lost male voters.

My question is how do you think Dems should appeal to this demographic? I would argue that they do through supporting all working class individuals. How could they better appeal then?

As for why Obama would be loosing them, I have no educated answer for that. Perhaps some, a minority, feel that there are limited rights available and giving more to one group means less for others. It is a fallacious mode of thought, but I know some people think this way.

Keep in mind that you are comparing exit polls to opinion polls. The exit polls do not include undecideds, obviously, while the opinion polls do. It would be better to compare them to opinion polls for around the same part of the election cycle in 2008. And of course there is margin of error.

about how women are foolish for supporting Obama. We just don't understand!

Go on, explain it to us, Donald Trump, Rick Santorum, or Sean Hannity. Ann Coulter already did her part, by saying that "stupid women are Obama's base".

With the undecideds so low, it is looking like a zero sum game -- AT BEST -- for Romney. And considering that any embrace of women, Latinos, left-handers, or Cubs fans risks alienating misogynists, racists, right-handers, and Braves fans, he will probably lose ground if he turns to the trusty old Etch-A-Sketch too much.

I remember reading that the McCain camp went into full-blown, panic-on-steroids mode when their internal polling showed them down ten points with women. Steve Schmitt said that he knew that there was absolutely no way in hell that they were winning a General Election with a 10 percent deficit with women.

Also, Obama was behind with men in 2008 by 7 percent. He's behind 10 percent now.

So, if we are ahead with women by 18 percent now, and down 10 percent with men--that still leaves us +8 percent (with these gender figures.

In 2008, Obama was ahead with women by 14 percent and down among men by 7--that left us with +6. So, this year is looking even better than 2008.

Great news.

So these women supporting Romney, they are women who don't need healthcare, who don't need medicare, who don't need social security, who don't care about women issues, or are against gay, latino, senior, and any other women from age 1 - 99. So my question is WHO ARE THESE WOMEN....The Stepford Wives?....The Romney Wives?

Until they became insane, the Republican party was a safe haven for the status quo.

White males didn't want change. Nobody at the top of the food chain would vote against their own self interest.

The R party has gone crazy, but the public usually has a lag time for voting patterns to be changed.
