Dr. Anthony Fauci: Florida reopened too fast, jumping 'over a couple of checkpoints'

Florida on Thursday crossed the 4,000-death threshold for the pandemic and logged the most deaths in a 24-hour period: 120. The state also drew the criticism of the nations top infectious disease expert.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, who heads the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, called out Florida for bypassing guidelines and opening too soon. Certainly Florida, he said, in an interview with the FiveThirtyEight podcast on Thursday, jumped over a couple of checkpoints.
Fauci also told the Wall Street Journal that states experiencing spikes in cases and deaths like Florida should consider lockdowns again. I think any state that is having a serious problem, that state should seriously look at shutting down, he said.
The states one-day death toll high on Thursday is likely a sign of a rise in coronavirus deaths in the days to come, says Dr. Jay Wolfson, Professor of Public Health, Medicine and Pharmacy at the University of South Florida. Its going to get worse, he said.

This week also has been Floridas deadliest so far. During the first five days of this week (Sunday through Thursday), the state reported 307 new deaths, which is a high for deaths reported during the same period throughout the pandemic...............................................................

In fact they are pushing hard right now to make sure that the schools all open for in-classroom teaching; a sure formula for exponential expansion of the virus. He is going to remain politically true to Donald Trump no matter how many Floridians it kills. That is Republican leadership in action.

(17,006 posts)officials. Killing your constituents children doesnt get you votes. Miami-Dade has already said they wont open. I think a lot of places are waiting until closer to the actual start date which is a month off in most places to say anything.
