Trump demands payroll tax cut in next Covid relief bill
Source: Politico
Donald Trump has signaled to Hill Republicans that he will not sign a new coronavirus stimulus package without the inclusion of a payroll tax cut, according to three sources close to the issue.
This new red line from the White House serves to illustrate the challenges that lay ahead in negotiating another Covid-19 relief package. GOP and Democratic congressional leaders are trillions of dollars apart in funding goals for the package, as well as how those funds will be spent.
Republicans have pushed for an overhaul to liability laws, which Democrats are skittish of, and Democrats are insisting on state and local funding, and enhanced unemployment benefits, which Republicans are cool to.
Trump's thinking, of course, is always evolving. The president has been fixated on a payroll tax cut for months, even though it has fallen on deaf ears on Capitol Hill Senate Republicans and House Democrats don't care for the proposal, and have resoundingly rejected it.

His thinking is evolving. Is that what you call his haphazard approach to governing?

(24,396 posts)All it does is starve money that is earmarked to support social security, Medicare and - believe it or not - unemployment benefits.
If you are currently unemployed, a payroll tax cut puts $0 in your pocket.

(17,931 posts)I wasn't aware he actually did that. And I still don't believe it. Payroll tax cuts are gimmicks that put little in people's pockets, but together put a dent in funding Social Security. Bad idea, but what do you expect out of a dotard who can't think straight.

(4,007 posts)by hurting SS is only 1/2 the game.
The longer term goal is to defund SS by sending all those trillions and trillions (yes, it's a ton of cash!) to Wall Street instead where investment house will run the program. Billions and billions of dollars earned in fees to do so, say 3-5% of every single dollar. That's why the R-Scums want to start with eliminating the payroll tax via a scheme that says the taxpayer and their employer keep more $. Then as the Trust Fund deteriorates, oh my, now we must close off SS and instead send all future payroll deductions and associated monies to Wall Street houses.

He knows, anyone unemployed is not going to vote for his pasty white sorry ass. So he's hoping to buy off the employed some how...
And yes, we are going to have to pay for all this shit, but he doesn't care as he is limited to two terms. Unless he's successful at repealing the term limit amendment, which I highly doubt (but if he does, I'm pulling an Einstein and getting the fuck out of here).

"Always have an exit plan, 007".
I have friends and relatives in Australia, that would be a long term plan.
In a jam, Mexico. Meds are cheap, don't need a prescription. I'm an educated and skilled worker, granted Mexico has law that says they have to hire citizens first...but knowing how they enforce laws...I will get a job, obviously won't be paid what I'm worth, but hey, I won't mind living in shack that's off the beach.
With your issues, it may be prudent to figure out ways to get out.
Granted, it seems a bit cowardly, but if Trump managed to get himself to be President for life...its all over. But I don't expect that to happen, its like me winning the Powerball when I don't buy a ticket.
But my wife and myself know from now deceased family members, everything seems fine, just a nutcase politician that won't get anywhere...then that nutcase becomes a dictator, then forced to sell everything at a below market value and get the hell out of Dodge. Then get the letters from family and friends who decided to ride it out, of the oppression, round ups, deportations, then the public executions...then nothing.
I don't expect that to be the case with Trump, not in the slightest. But never say never, and have a plan in case the never happens.

(1,204 posts)I agree that payroll taxes should be cut but as usual, the Trump method is irresponsible.
Instead of the (total) 14% rate in place now, a Democratic way should be:
lift the cap from $117,000 to NO CAP. Then, decrease the total payroll tax to 4%. I wish a Dem would advocate for those savings in a campaign. That's the Democratic way.
And besides, my Trump friends are always advocating for 'Flat Tax'. What we have not is not a flat tax, sooooo devise it with no cap.
