Coronavirus now spreading faster in suburbs like Orange County than in L.A. County

In the first months of the pandemic, Orange County leaders looked at the frightening coronavirus outbreaks and rising death toll to the north in Los Angeles County and felt their communities were doing pretty well in comparison.

But less than two months later, the conditions have changed dramatically. Over the last week, Orange County as well as two other suburban counties to the east of L.A. — Riverside and San Bernardino — are reporting worse coronavirus case rates per capita than L.A. County, according to a Times analysis.
The shift is all the more dramatic because Los Angeles County — long the epicenter of the coronavirus in California — continues to see huge spikes in cases. On Thursday, it reported more than 4,000 new cases, shattering a one-day record. But the new surge in COVID-19 has been particularly painful for suburban counties that were eager to reopen their economies after months of stay-at-home orders and where political battles raged about whether the government should require residents to wear masks in public settings.
The three counties opened many businesses a week before Los Angeles County. And along with the decisions by all three counties to rescind local mask-wearing orders, some experts said that sent an unintended message to some residents that they could go back to old routines.

In her opinion, the numbers look bad because “everyone is getting tested for coronavirus” and “they’re giving a lot of false positives.” She wasn’t wearing a face covering. “Wearing a mask is kind of outrageous to me. Think about all of the other illnesses,” Campbell said.
She worried that her daughter, who will be heading to kindergarten in the fall, will have to wear a face covering to class. “I’d hate to send my child to school with a mask on her face, and when she’s 18 she’s afraid of society ’cause she has to wear a mask all the time,” Campbell said.

something that coastal California has yearly. It may impact one area for some time while other areas nearby are fine. And suddenly the winds shift, sparks from flaming debris blow across a canyon and ignite within an adjacent area, and now an area that "wasn't in danger", is on fire.
They don't get that there is no magic isolation shield around them. All it takes is one super-spreader at some big indoor shindig, and it's game on.

Every time an airplane goes over low and fast, I start freaking out.
The climate here in the east is opposite of yours - our winter/spring is the "dry season" (not counting any snowfall). So in early-mid spring, we often go through a brief period of very low humidity, moderate winds, low rainfall, and what the NWS indicates as "drying of fine fuels" (this is usually before the deciduous trees leaf out), triggering Red Flag warnings for conditions that may trigger or fan brush fires. But as soon as summer kicks in, so does the humidity, and that's the end of that! We also often go into a "dry period" during the late summer/early fall with a big reduction of rainfall... but that often gets alleviated by remnants from tropical storms.
I've gotten superstitious. I don't even say the words anymore.
I live in an area very prone to these situations.
The second I hear one of those planes, I run outside and do a 360, looking for smoke. Half the neighbors are out there doing the same thing.
Where I live, everyone is prepared to go at a moment's notice. All the time. I have all of my stuff packed up and sitting in the living room. I got tired of putting it away after every scare. Now it's just sitting in one spot, don't even have to think about it.
I'm not setting foot outside until there's an effective vaccine. Mainly because of these dipshits.
