Coronavirus now spreading faster in suburbs like Orange County than in L.A. County

Source: Los Angeles Times

JULY 17, 2020 5 AM

In the first months of the pandemic, Orange County leaders looked at the frightening coronavirus outbreaks and rising death toll to the north in Los Angeles County and felt their communities were doing pretty well in comparison.

{snip}

But less than two months later, the conditions have changed dramatically. Over the last week, Orange County as well as two other suburban counties to the east of L.A. — Riverside and San Bernardino — are reporting worse coronavirus case rates per capita than L.A. County, according to a Times analysis.

The shift is all the more dramatic because Los Angeles County — long the epicenter of the coronavirus in California — continues to see huge spikes in cases. On Thursday, it reported more than 4,000 new cases, shattering a one-day record. But the new surge in COVID-19 has been particularly painful for suburban counties that were eager to reopen their economies after months of stay-at-home orders and where political battles raged about whether the government should require residents to wear masks in public settings.

The three counties opened many businesses a week before Los Angeles County. And along with the decisions by all three counties to rescind local mask-wearing orders, some experts said that sent an unintended message to some residents that they could go back to old routines.

3. Orange County speaks, from the article:
Fri Jul 17, 2020, 10:46 AM

Up the road, Lisa Campbell, a 27-year-old Huntington Beach resident, walked out of a restaurant, to-go bag in hand. “I think it’s all bull—,” Campbell said.

In her opinion, the numbers look bad because “everyone is getting tested for coronavirus” and “they’re giving a lot of false positives.” She wasn’t wearing a face covering. “Wearing a mask is kind of outrageous to me. Think about all of the other illnesses,” Campbell said.

She worried that her daughter, who will be heading to kindergarten in the fall, will have to wear a face covering to class. “I’d hate to send my child to school with a mask on her face, and when she’s 18 she’s afraid of society ’cause she has to wear a mask all the time,” Campbell said.

She's worried that her daughter might have to wear a mask . . .

we're just a hop, skip, and jump from freebasing.

The rapid reopeners, the petty-minded small business owners, the anti-mask protestors will be shunned when this is over, if this is ever over.

I thought Gov. Newsom had this under control, and I don't follow it closely state-by-state ... did he cave to the no-maskers? He didn't have much choice, they weren't following protocol because protocol is not for them, it's for people who want to stay alive. It's better to own the libs than to remain alive, don't you think?

6. Newsom is using a "dimmer switch" so the state mandate changes frequently.

At one point masks were required statewide, then in May the order was rescinded, then in June it was re-instated. But the counties in question aren't enforcing the mandate. Here's a paragraph that shows the problem:

But mask resistance remains strong. Orange County’s former health officer, who issued a mandatory mask order, resigned after receiving a death threat; it was her replacement who rescinded the order. The rescission was reversed a week later by Gov. Gavin Newsom, who on June 18 issued a statewide mandatory mask order.

Another complication is that different counties have different mandates:

In the face of alarming increases in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations statewide, Newsom two weeks ago ordered bars and indoor restaurant dining in most of the state to be shut. This week, he ordered the rest of the state to also close bars and indoor dining rooms. And in the hardest-hit counties that are home to more than 88% of the state’s population, he also ordered the shutdown of businesses such as gyms, malls, nail salons and hair salons.

Also it's kind of a crap shoot as to who knows what since people get their news from all over the place and most of it is national.

13. Newsom moved to phase 2 on June 12th ...

This allowed, bars, gyms, dine-in restaurants, bowling alleys, in-person church services, ... all to open up.

At that time, California was just about to flatten out, but the pressure to open was too great so Gov. Newsom opened up!

I didn't understand it, because we were just starting to see the Memorial Day numbers kicking in.
That's just 1 weekend and now he's opening up the whole state.

Understand that people started going to beaches a couple of weeks prior to Memorial Day, and Newsom had all the beaches closed. But local economies need the beach-goer money, so they wouldn't enforce the closed beaches. The enforced the closed beach parking, but the beach-goers just parked on the street.

This was just about the same time that the Pendejo in the WH was screaming to his clan to pressure the (D) Governors to open the state.

Newsom did and here we are.

Idiots from Orange County and other RED areas bitched and complained about their "freedumbs" and losing money and their tans. They protested and Newsom opened too early. Everybody said so.

Why do those who sacrificed by wearing masks and staying inside have to suffer longer because of these idiots. If they just bit the bullet the economy would open and stay open, schools would be able to open and hospitals wouldn't be full. But NO, these whining, self absorbed losers have to ruin it long term for everyone. These spoiled brats are making it cost more money and take longer to reopen. My former 1st graders understand this simple concept better than these close minded lemmings.

of folks travel to Los Angeles County to work. It was just a matter of time for the spread to increase in Orange County.

Same for Riverside and San Bernardino counties - they travel to the greater LA county area to work...I know because I did the San Bernardino to Redondo Beach commute for years.

something that coastal California has yearly. It may impact one area for some time while other areas nearby are fine. And suddenly the winds shift, sparks from flaming debris blow across a canyon and ignite within an adjacent area, and now an area that "wasn't in danger", is on fire.

They don't get that there is no magic isolation shield around them. All it takes is one super-spreader at some big indoor shindig, and it's game on.

The climate here in the east is opposite of yours - our winter/spring is the "dry season" (not counting any snowfall). So in early-mid spring, we often go through a brief period of very low humidity, moderate winds, low rainfall, and what the NWS indicates as "drying of fine fuels" (this is usually before the deciduous trees leaf out), triggering Red Flag warnings for conditions that may trigger or fan brush fires. But as soon as summer kicks in, so does the humidity, and that's the end of that! We also often go into a "dry period" during the late summer/early fall with a big reduction of rainfall... but that often gets alleviated by remnants from tropical storms.

I've gotten superstitious. I don't even say the words anymore.

I live in an area very prone to these situations.
The second I hear one of those planes, I run outside and do a 360, looking for smoke. Half the neighbors are out there doing the same thing.

Where I live, everyone is prepared to go at a moment's notice. All the time. I have all of my stuff packed up and sitting in the living room. I got tired of putting it away after every scare. Now it's just sitting in one spot, don't even have to think about it.
