Supreme Court rejects House Democrats' plea to speed up Trump tax case

Source: NBC News

The Supreme Court on Monday said it will not speed up the process for getting President Donald Trump's legal battle with House Democrats over the president's business records back into the lower courts.

The House legal counsel had asked the court to immediately put into effect its decision earlier this month that said while Trump did not have an absolute right to refuse to comply with legitimate congressional subpoenas for documents, Congress also did not have unlimited authority to seek materials from a president because its demands must be connected to a legitimate legislative purpose.

The ruling sent the case back to the lower courts, where the scope of the House subpoenas is likely to be narrowed.

Supreme Court decisions ordinarily do not take effect legally until 25 days after the rulings are issued, which in this case would be August 3. Three House committees that sought Trump's taxes and other records told the Supreme Court that their investigations "are ongoing, remain urgent, and have been impeded by the lack of finality in these litigations, which were initiated in April 2019."

Since the tax data WON'T be publicly released, it's hard to argue that the process needs to rush brooklynite Jul 2020 #2
I think it should be leaked. OneCrazyDiamond Jul 2020 #5

Just before the election with just enough time for everyone to analyse it and digest its meaning.

President Biden should also pardon the leaker as a whistle blower.

Agent Orange is illegitimate, and illegal as they come. At this point whatever knocks him down is justified.

First, when you endorse releasing private documents SPECIFICALLY for political purposes, you have no argument when Republicans do the same.

Second, you have NO evidence that Trump's taxes show criminal or ethical wrongdoing, so there is no legal basis for whistleblower protection.

More to the point, you apparently have no understanding of what a whistleblower rule means. It calls for a SPECIFIC complaint of a SPECIFIC violation of a SPECIFIC rule or Statute being made to a SPECIFIC investigative office. Publicly releasing documents absent a criminal charge and judicial proceeding would result in the same charges that Julian Assange is now facing. I would expect Biden's AG to prosecute that person to the full extent of the law.

What makes it tolleratable, in this instance, is the damage Trump, and really the whole GOP (Bar included) has done. It must be stopped. I fear without undeniable crimes, he will get re-elected.

Hopefully I am wrong.
