Philly officer who pepper sprayed peaceful protesters charged with assault

Source: ABC News

A Philadelphia police officer has been charged with three counts of simple assault after video purportedly showed him spraying peaceful, kneeling protesters with pepper spray during protests against police brutality, officials said.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner announced the charges against Officer Richard Nicoletti, 35, on Wednesday.

Nicoletti was seen on social media videos on June 1 spraying the three protesters "without provocations," according to a statement from Krasner's office.

He was also seen physically pulling down the goggles of a protester who was kneeling in the street and spraying her in the face and "violently" throwing another protester, who was sitting hunched over to protect his face, onto his back and "continually spraying him with [pepper spray] while he was lying down and standing back up," the statement said.

I want names, ranks and serial numbers of all these hired to wage a war on America. I also want to know exactly who hired them.

They have blatantly abused their authority for years and have gotten away with it. It is their norm. Way to much testosterone in the union and PD.

Simply assault. In most states, that is considered a misdemeanor resulting in a fine, if found guilty. I object to the way in which the officer used the pepper spray. Violently, excessively with too much enthusiasm. The problem is the PD gave this officer the pepper spray and generally give police limited immunity. These peaceful protestors were also blocking the streets and the police had to remove them/clear the streets. Today police use tear gas and pepper spray and other non-lethal weapons, because these weapons are the easiest to use to get the MOST EXPEDIANT RESULTS. Get it done ASAP is what is taught now. We have to convince law enforcement that this is unacceptable, especially in public protesting. Police view protestors not as patriots exercising their rights but as TROUBLEMAKERS. That has to change too! If we continue to see flagrant abuse of citizens today, what can we expect tomorrow?
