Sources: Big Ten votes to cancel football season; no games for Michigan, Michigan State in 2020

Source: Detroit Free Press

The Big Ten has voted to cancel the 2020 college football season in a historic move that stems from concerns related to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, multiple people with knowledge of the decision confirmed to the Free Press.

The presidents voted, 12-2, Sunday to end the fall sports in the conference. Michigan and Michigan State — which both has physicians as presidents — voted to end the season, sources said. Only Nebraska and Iowa voted to play, Dan Patrick said on his radio show Monday.

The sources requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the decision. A formal announcement is expected Tuesday, the sources said. However, the situation remains fluid as the Big Ten tries to coordinate its announcement with other Power Five conferences.

A message to confirm the presidents' vote has not yet been returned from the Big Ten office. The Chicago Tribune reported around noon that "a top-level" Big Ten source texted that, "No final decisions have been made," while the Columbus Dispatch reported as of 12:25 p.m. that Ohio State had not yet been ordered to suspend practices.

Pretty much all red states. That will leave a big mark with the South.

I'm upset because of college wrestling most likely done. Not much social distancing when you're locked up in a cradle.

Those schools are located in redder states, so I guess it's not too surprising.

Well, there's the schools in Indiana too. Their football teams often don't fare very well, though.

I'm not the type of person who would freak out if some low-student rural school reopened (while taking precautions), realizing it's not the same conditions everywhere. "Universal" rules aren't always practical.

The virus is pretty much making the rules right now, as far as I'm concerned, and several people are just prolonging the problem by not accepting it.

I don't think it's safe at those two universities either. Both have big student bodies, like all of the Big Ten schools except maybe Northwestern... but that school is near Chicago.

Omaha metro is close to 1 million
Lincoln is close to 300,000

That's in a state of 1.9 million.

Lincoln has a progressive Democratic mayor. Omaha's Congressional District is likely to vote for Biden this year and grant its electoral vote to him, just as they did for Obama in 2008.

Unfortunately, the rest of the state votes at like 95 percent Republican.

Detroit Free Press muffed the punt. They need to get back to basics - blocking and tackling.

In this case, you need to do things is this order:

1. Get the story.
2. Publish the story.

Publishing the story without first getting the story breaks the rules.

I do think it brings to mind kind of where we’re at in our response to this as a country. Like we’re trying to bring baseball back during a pandemic that’s killed 130,000 people. We’re way worse off as a country than we were in March when we shut this thing down. Look at where other developed countries are in their response to this. We haven’t done any of the things that other countries have done to bring sports back. Sports are like the reward of a functioning society. And we’re trying to just bring it back, even though we’ve taken none of the steps to flatten the curve, whatever you want to say. We did flatten the curve a little bit, but we didn’t use that time to do anything productive. We just opened back up for Memorial Day. We decided we’re done with it. If there aren’t sports, it’s going to be because people are not wearing masks, because the response to this has been so politicized.

And Republicans want to rush kids back to school?! (Not that SCIENCE sways them, so it shouldn't be too surprising.)

https://www.statnews.com/2020/07/27/covid19-concerns-about-lasting-heart-damage/

One study examined the cardiac MRIs of 100 people who had recovered from Covid-19 and compared them to heart images from 100 people who were similar but not infected with the virus. Their average age was 49 and two-thirds of the patients had recovered at home. More than two months later, infected patients were more likely to have troubling cardiac signs than people in the control group: 78 patients showed structural changes to their hearts, 76 had evidence of a biomarker signaling cardiac injury typically found after a heart attack, and 60 had signs of inflammation.

They won't be able to social distance! Linemen will be breathing heavily on each other!

What about meat plants? Would it be ethical to make them work if they had no PPE? They're usually jammed together too, but they won't breathe as hard.

What if the meat packaging employees got tested regularly, and also signed a waiver that they were totally responsible if they got sick without wearing PPE? Okay then?

It's selfish, sick thinking to me. And for a freakin' game.

Invent a mouthpiece with N100 filtration that's worn all the time (like their current mouthpieces that protect their teeth and tongues), then maybe it could work.
