MINDEN, Nev. (AP) Several dozen Black Lives Matter demonstrators at a weekend protest in rural Nevada were greeted by a far larger group of counter-demonstrators, including some bearing military-style weapons and tactical gear, but a sheriff who had made controversial remarks earlier about the racial injustice movement reported no arrests or serious incidents.
The clash of rallies Saturday came days after Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley attracted national attention for telling the local library not to bother calling 911 for help after board members publicly considered a statement opposing all forms of racism, hatred, inequality and injustice and the line We support #Black Lives Matter.
The library abandoned plans to issue the diversity statement and the sheriff backed off, saying deputies would continue to respond to all 911 calls.
Plans to organize a demonstration against racial injustice that spread on social media spawned competing campaigns supporting Coverley and inviting supporters to back sheriffs deputies.

I have deep roots in Carson Valley. I learned to swim at the Carson Valley Aquatic Center, where I was taught to monkey-tree-rocketship my way through the water. My mother taught special education at Gardnerville Elementary School. Our secret family cheesecake recipe actually came from Barbara Storke of the old Storke Dairy. My first job as a journalist was with the Record Courier. I have never felt unsafe in Douglas County, until today.
Douglas County Sheriff Dan Coverley made national headlines when he issued a public letter to the Douglas County Library Board after they proposed support for the Black Lives Matter movement. In the letter, Coverley threatened to ignore emergency calls for assistance.
Though Coverley later stated he would respond to calls for assistance, many across the country were outraged.
In Carson City, a group of about 30-40 people, most of them young and many of them juveniles, have been peacefully protesting and marching in front of the Nevada Legislature every Saturday this summer. It was these protesters, joined together with other regional Black Lives Matter movements, who organized a peaceful protest in Douglas County to support the library and express their outrage at the sheriffs statement.

(402 posts)I live in Reno. Minden is about an hour south of Reno. I remember coming back from a music festival in California when John McCain had just announced Sarah Palin as his running mates. There were McCain-Palin signs everywhere in Minden and it's neighboring town of Gardnerville. Bunch of big ranches and right-wing red-necks down there, for sure.

Almost all live in Reno, Tahoe, places in Utah

(24,329 posts)Their HQ is there
Many of the staff choose to drive an hour (or more) to get there
Some work 40 hours a week and then take the whole next week off
That's how staff in places like Yerington (where they work directly with boys) work
on edit:
I worked in Yerington for one year in 1993
Things have probably changed a lot
But, since the staff is minority-majority I'm guessing living in Minden still is a no go

(19,201 posts)Grab their guns, of course! They always feel so much safer facing off against unarmed protestors when they have their trusty semi-automatic weapons. Cowards, the entire lot.

(367 posts)The Sheriff is a RW nut job. And, why are the police officers not wearing masks?

(9,998 posts)Saying the police will not respond to 911 calls because a public library proposed support for racial fairness and equality should be illegal. His job is to respond to the public, not act as a thought censor.
I am so tired of this crap.

(6,931 posts)When you came into town you checked you gun in and it was locked up until you left. To many coming in on cattle drives and hitting the saloons to let them have their bang bangs.
Fist fights...sure, go for it!
