Full Headline: Republican candidate for Congress in Connecticut’s 2nd District abruptly drops out following his arrest late Monday

By DANIELA ALTIMARI HARTFORD COURANT | AUG 11, 2020 AT 10:59 AM

A Republican running for Congress in Connecticut’s 2nd District abruptly dropped his bid on the day of the primary following his arrest.

Thomas Gilmer of Madison was arrested by Wethersfield police late Monday, a department official confirmed. He was charged on a warrant with first-degree unlawful restraint and second-degree strangulation and posted a $5,000 bond.

Sources told the Courant the charges stem from a violent altercation with a former girlfriend. Police said they were first contacted on July 22 and opened an investigation.

Gilmer, the Republican party’s endorsed candidate, released a statement blaming his primary opponent, Justin Anderson, for “slinging mud.‘'

They sure can pick them, eh? So he strangles his ex-girlfriend and it's his opponent's fault! I think trump has a job for him in his cabinet.

Easy Democratic win. Although I don’t know the area so it might be a Democratic win anyway.

Our two Senators are Democrats, too, as are our Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of the State, Treasurer, and Comptroller.

The person he would have run against is Joe Courtney, who has been in office for 14 years and wins easily. There were Democrats in that seat for a number of years, too.

It's a sea of blue out there!

You just asked a question that seems like a set up for your punch line (post #10, above) which is basically the number of fingers you use to strangle a woman determines if it’s first, second, or third degree strangling.

Not funny. I would suggest maybe deleting this post and the follow up?

<on edit> read the fully story in the link if you have the stomach for it. What that monster did (apparently video taped) was so much more then “3 vs. 10 fingers”. I don’t know what “second degree strangling” is, but it sounds to me more like he should be charged with attempted murder.

I don't really know and definitely don't hang with any RW Trump/GPO pee pee types as a general rule.

In fact, the only one I do know fairly well is an otherwise great guy, a biker type of Italian descent from West Haven Connecticut who I only connect with on FB anymore. He has as a fairly large bunch of similarly deluded friends from there who post on his page as well and more than a few are related to him.

It's clear from their pronouncements that they know who to hate but if memory serves, it wasn't all that long ago that Italians were the hated group and I'm just old enough to remember conversations pondering whether or not Italians could be properly classified as "white" people.

I know Connecticut to be by and large a very progressive state but the irony on display day in and day out there on my friend's page is mind boggling and the only real glimpse I have into the hate filled minds of a significant number of our fellow countrymen.

IDK why but I just had to get that off my chest, sorry and thanks to those who listened.

...with disdain.

This was the result of huge immigration from Europe after WWII, lots of Italians traveled to NYC and settled in. They were spoken of as being stupid, loud, dirty, criminals, and as you point out some wondered if they were even "white". They were discriminated against and treated poorly.

Then in the late 50s into the 60s lots of people came to NYC from Puerto Rico and they were treated even worse, probably because it was evident that they were not "white".

We've gone through eras of discrimination over the years - the Germans in the early 20th Century, and as mentioned Italians and Puerto Ricans, and now those from India and the Middle East and, its seems ALWAYS Asians.

I remember my (step) grandfather in Toronto talking about immigrants in the 1960s, mostly from Pakistan, calling them "those Pakis with their goddamn turbines" (that's how he pronounced it!)

Throughout all of this, obviously from about 5-12 years old, I was too young to have any opinions. But I was amazed at how people acted toward others just because of where they came from.

He's ahead by 50.2% to 49.8%. And indication of the values of republican voters, (although we had an unprecedented number of mail-in votes so most were sent in before this incident.

Even so, nobody is going to beat Democrat Joe Courtney in November.
