ICE agents detain Bend men as angry crowd protests

Source: The Bulletin

As night fell on hundreds of protesters outside Crane Shed Commons Wednesday, Bend’s new police chief said his officers would continue to monitor the standoff that prevented federal immigration officers from leaving the city with two men.

“We are on scene and will remain on scene indefinitely,” said Mike Krantz, the former Portland Police Bureau officer who took over as chief on Monday. “We hope for a completely peaceful resolution and for our community members to express themselves.”

The protesters had surrounded two buses outside Crane Shed Commons about 1 p.m. Wednesday, angry that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials had detained the men.

Initially, an armed ICE officer in a flak vest would not comment on the actions as he hid his badge.

1. Interesting. Bend is in eastern Oregon, in an area that is fairly conservative, politically.

But then conservative rural Iowans have stood up for their immigrant workers, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised there are people in Bend standing up for immigrants. The Deschutes Brewery in Bend makes some good beer.

They seem to be punishing that state lately, probably because of the Democratic governor

6. No, it's a bright blue state with an east-west divide. East is Trump country, rural, few people.

Western Oregon is far more populous. The Willamette Valley, 100 miles plus long, has most of the people in the state and it’s true blue. Trump picks on Oregon, IMO, because it’s relatively small and weak and he wants to pick on some blue states that can’t effectively fight back.

So, they don't go after the undocumented criminals - especially since the gangs and Mob affiliates who hire those criminals either got them hired or provide support to them (via funneled contractor support or under the table deals with their bosses) and might make trouble for those agents.

ICE agents don't typically go through a robust background check - just saying. There has been a major concern over the legal and emotional/mental fitness of many ICE recruits for years.

And the average otherwise law abiding undocumented community member usually won't fight or shoot back.
