CDC blindsided by Trump's statement it could deploy teams to schools this fall
Source: CNN
Leaders at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were blindsided this week when President Donald Trump announced that the agency could deploy teams to assist schools with safely reopening in the fall, a senior CDC official told CNN.
"My administration also stands ready to deploy CDC teams to support schools that are opening and schools that need help in safety and in order to safely reopen," Trump said on Tuesday during a briefing.
The announcement left CDC officials scrambling this week to train-up staff to be able to deploy if they are called upon, the senior official said.
Trumps comments are the latest example of a breakdown in communication between the public health agency and the White House.

(25,873 posts)At least not the K-12 public schools. I'm pretty sure that most that are open are teaching remotely, or are not having every student come every day. And those that have opened to in-person teaching already needed to quarantine people because of positive Covid-19 tests.
Id due time they will all shut back down. Oh, and at least one school district in Arizona has had to cancel opening plans because of a teacher walk-out. I expect that will happen in a lot more places.

(4,783 posts)School districts could have properly used CDC assistance when they were working overtime to establish future opening strategies, when their governors dumped it on them. By now, their plans are comprehensively compete and approved. I don't believe they need or want Trump's campaign pomposity.

The death cult marches on.
Can you believe that people from the CDC would actually go
into the schools like that?
Words fail.

(7,403 posts)It is all still being done by the seat of the pants. Somebody asks a question that Trump is unprepared for and he blurts this stuff out. Just like ingesting disinfectants as a treatment option for CV-45.
First obvious question is how many schools are in need of this support. That tells you how much scaling up you need to do. What areas of support are most in need. That tells you how you need to structure your support. Etc., etc. And all of this should already be part of the planning document everybody is working from but if that were the case nobody would be blindsided by this. Operating by blindside is a failure of management and leadership. Ironically, this was probably all spelled out in the documents Trump inherited from Obama but that he choose to throw away.

The CDC should scramble to train staff for this nonsense, but politely tell him that's not what they're there for.
