Yale's COVID-19 saliva test used in NBA gets FDA emergency approval

Source: NBC News

Federal officials gave emergency approval this weekend to a coronavirus saliva test that Yale University researchers used on NBA players and staff.

In a statement, Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hanh called the test "groundbreaking,” partly because it doesn’t need additional components, which have been prone to shortages, necessary with the standard nasal swab COVID-19 test.

The test, known as SalivaDirect, “is simpler, less expensive, and less invasive than the traditional method for such testing,” Yale said in a news release Saturday.

The authorization allows the test to bypass the department's regular approval process.

Ruling someone ineligible to toss a basketball is different than determining whether someone can go to work- or endanger others.

The big question is- does it work to show who is infected if they are, and who is not, if they are not?

“Emergency approval to use” is NOT the same as “FDA approved as safe And effective”.

People need to understand the difference.

playing basketball in the NBA is going to work and potentially endangering others.

I do agree with you about the approval process.

She maintains that it does work and is better at determining infectious positive vs non-infectious positive. Their work is published and has been reproducible. They just couldn’t get the EUA from the FDA and were not being given a reason. Looks like that changed.
