August 24, 2020 at 1:32 p.m. EDT

The New York Attorney General is investigating President Trump’s private business for a allegedly misleading lenders by inflating the value of its assets, the attorney general’s office said Monday in a legal filing.

In the filing, signed by a deputy to Attorney General Letitia James, the attorney general’s office said it is investigating Trump’s use of “Statements of Financial Condition” — documents Trump sent to lenders, summarizing his assets and debts.

The filing asks a New York state judge to compel the Trump Organization to provide information it has been withholding from investigators — including a subpoena seeking an interview with the president’s son Eric.

The attorney general’s office said began investigating after Trump’s former lawyer and “fixer,” Michael Cohen, told Congress in February 2019 that Trump had used these statements to inflate his net worth to lenders.

Evidence collected for a civil proceeding can be used in subsequent criminal prosecution, and losing a civil suit does not preclude subsequent criminal prosecution. There is no double jeopardy, because a civil suit only puts your money at risk, not your liberty.

Even were one to accede the immunity in office claim, it is hard to see any sensible argument that would extend to a business enterprise, or to family members....

Is he going for the all-time crimes committed by a Prez record? If so, he's smashed previous records and his legacy will be the most crooked, criminal sack of shit to ever hold that office.

He's like the Cy Young of pres criminals.

His record will be virtually unbreakable.

The NY AG's office has gone to court to force the Trump Org. to comply with subpoenas for testimony (spec. Eric Trump) and docs as part of a fraud investigation: https://ag.ny.gov/sites/default/files/doc_11_memorandum_of_law.pdf

The doc lists several properties the AG's office is probing, but one focus is an estate in NY

Looks like it may be the time for a repeat of the "when can you plead the Fifth in response to a demand for documents" explainer

NY AG says Eric Trump cancelled an interview, and now won't comply with their subpoena -- citing "rights afforded to every individual under the Constitution."

Also, it looks like the NYAG has dug into one of the biggest unsolved mysteries in
@realdonaldtrump
's finances: the $50M+ loan he claims to owe to "Chicago Unit Acquisition," which is owned by...Trump.
Here's an explainer on that loan from
