Jared Kushner brokered a deal with Russia for 45 ventilators to be brought to the US to help with the coronavirus crisis, but they all turned out to be faulty, a new report says.
Two senior Trump administration officials told The Daily Beast that Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law and one of his senior advisers, helped to secure an equipment order that included the ventilators.
They were unloaded from a Russian-marked plane in New York in March, as the COVID-19 outbreak was intensifying in the state.
The report said the order was carried out by the State Department but was sped along thanks to Kushner's relationship with Kirill Dmitriev, the CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, a sovereign wealth fund of the Russian government.

ABC also reported that the shipment contained thousands of medical supplies that are not commonly used by hospitals, like household cleaning gloves, and that Russia billed the US almost $660,000 for them.

Russia's ambassador to the US called the shipment a "humanitarian mission." Trump welcomed the equipment, saying at a press briefing on April 2 that Russian President Vladimir Putin had offered him equipment in a phone call.

From the Senate to inside his administration. They have to go down and there has to be a way to make things right again. RISE UP AMERICA.

(44,973 posts)So these ventilators were never going to work straight out of the box.
I use equipment for a hobby that can often arrive running 220. If there was anyone competent involved on the "Task Force"" that would have been brought up at a meeting. They should have known.

(61,899 posts)The real problem was that Putin operates as corruptly Trump, though he's more competent at it. The stuff Russia sent to Italy (220v/50hz) was also junk.
Unless the goods are intended for a specialized mass market (e.g. an entry-level television), the typical spec will read something like "INPUT: 100-240V~50-60hz ___ A OUTPUT: __ V __ A"
For example an Ohio-made ventilator uses a dual-voltage AC adapter that resembles a laptop PC power pack (except that it's bigger, more robust and much more expensive).

(111,270 posts)Of course Russian machines won't work here. Their power is 220v 50 Hz. Ours is 120v, 60 Hz.
I can only remember 220 power outlets in one hospital I worked in, a brand new building in a teaching hospital in Boston.
The ventilators were most likely perfectly fine--just not here.

(3,063 posts)Illustrated with a trove of internal documents and emails detailing the governments hurried negotiations to obtain ventilators during the early spread of the coronavirus pandemic, Democratic members of the House Oversight Committee say the Trump administration may have overpaid Philips by as much as $500 million for tens of thousands of the critically needed devices.
Their report says the Department of Health and Human Services also neglected to enforce a contract with the medtech manufacturer that was already on the booksa 2014 purchase order from the Obama administration for Philips to develop and provide 10,000 ventilators for the national emergency stockpile by 2019, at a price of $3,280 per unit.
But this past March, the White House pushed those deadlines out to September 2022, following multiple delays and extensions over the years since it was signed. Instead, they inked a new deal: to acquire 42,900 Trilogy EV300 ventilators, at $15,000 apiece, delivered by the end of 2020.
