Georgia no longer worst among states for coronavirus transmission

ATLANTA (AP) Some Georgians are in line for more unemployment assistance as the state has given up the dubious title of being the state where COVID-19 is spreading the fastest.
Georgia has been overtaken by Mississippi as the No. 1 state with the highest number of new cases per 100,000 people, according to a 14-day average kept by The Associated Press. The coronavirus is still spreading rapidly in the Peach State compared to other places, though, with 355 new infections per 100,000 people over the 14 days ended Sunday. More than half the states have a transmission rate thats less than half that level.
Georgias transmission rate and its overall case count have been falling throughout August. The seven-day average of cases is down more than a third from its high in late July. Total confirmed infections rose above 256,000 on Monday, according to the state Department of Public Health. Deaths from the summer spike continue to be reported at a high rate, with confirmed fatalities now totaling 5,156.
One place where the virus is still spreading fast is at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville. Officials there reported 150 additional confirmed infections over the weekend and on Monday. Baldwin County commissioners on Monday voted 3-2 to mandate masks in public places, after rejecting the move on a 3-2 vote Friday. The city of Milledgeville approved an emergency mask rule Friday.

As the cases slowdown, will Kemp renew his attempts to over turn Atlanta's mask mandate?

(8,081 posts)Georgia's "overall case count" has been "falling throughout August" is confusing at best. The overall case count for a state doesn't fall unless cases of Covid-19 that were confirmed are for some reason subtracted from the total.
Reading the sentence i can infer that the writer meant that the rate of new cases was falling, but reading the sentence wouldn't necessarily give me that meaning.
What ever happened to copy editors? Is this another job (like spell checking) given over to AI?

(32,678 posts)The number of new cases could be going down, although I don't know whether that's what they meant.
We're seeing new case count reductions in Pennsylvania now for the last 2 months, where several PA counties have been downgraded from"red" to "yellow." A few counties are now considered "green" in PA, just recently. It doesn't mean the virus is gone, it means people are following the protocols and the danger is reduced in those areas.

(12,569 posts)We had around 3300 just a few weeks ago; yesterday a bit over 2200. And only 4 hospitals in the state are listed as "severe". Gee, could it be the increased number of people wearing masks actually worked? Of course the mask haters will claim "herd immunity", with no proof
