'We need it yesterday': Mayor Turner makes plea for 'Ike Dike'

Mayor Sylvester Turner made an impassioned plea Wednesday for federal officials to speed up plans for a coastal barrier, warning of the destruction Hurricane Laura could have brought to the Houston area had it tracked farther west.

“Can you imagine that being in the Galveston Bay and the storm surge being 30 miles in?” Turner said at a news conference, where he expressed cautious optimism the storm largely would spare Houston.

The mayor then turned to U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Houston, who was standing to his left.

“If we needed any proof, any evidence that there is a need for funding, congresswoman, I hate to keep — but you’re here. That coastal spine is desperately needed,” Turner said.
