Despite USPS chief DeJoy's pledge, postal unions say mail delays persist

Source: ABC News

Postal union leaders in five battleground states told ABC News that they have seen few concrete steps to reverse or halt a set of cost-cutting measures that have slowed mail service, despite assurances last week from Postmaster General Louis DeJoy that he would “suspend” those initiatives until after the general election.

DeJoy’s announcement led to confusion among some in the Postal Service ranks as to whether he meant there would not be cutbacks in addition to the ones already in place, which include reductions in overtime and limiting mail carrier trips, or if it meant a return to prior operational standards before the cuts altogether.

For now, the union officials said DeJoy's initiatives remain in place -- despite a deluge of legal and legislative efforts to reverse them. As a result, and with the clock ticking on election day, many of them said the mail continues to pile up in sorting facilities.

Nick Casselli, the president of the Philadelphia postal union, said overtime pay has not come back fully, post offices are still operating with slashed hours, and trucks are still being instructed not to stay and wait for all of the mail to be loaded on in an effort to keep to a stricter schedule, instead of staying later.

DeJoy said "....mail processing equipment and blue collection boxes will remain where they are." That can be interpreted in different ways, but I take it to mean that processing equipment and mail boxes will stay in the landfills where they were dumped.

unbelievable.

Yes, DeJoy told you he's making no changes to the policy implementation, just freezing it. Take their words literally. Don't filter with hope, sugar, expectation, or rose-colored glasses.

Has he explained WHY he did this, or what was expected? Absent a study of outcomes, efficiency in money terms objective, he's just playing political games with it for fearless leader.

There’s a reason DeJoy fired or demoted twenty plus managers and replaced them with his own people. While DeJoy lies to Congress and the public, they will quietly continue the sabotage. We Democrats cannot rely on the mail other than to receive ballots, and even then there’s a danger in Republican-led states that they will be mailed out so late that they do not even get to voters by election day.

There is something that perplexes me. First class mail is in fact delayed, but when I order from Amazon Prime, I often receive their packages the very next day. How can this be ?

They had mailed a receipt to my husband on July 7. The delivery location was our PO Box, about a mile away from the investment office location. It was returned to them as 'undeliverable' even though the address was correct, complete to the nine digit Zip code. This was first class mail, no need for a signature or anything.

Six weeks to NOT deliver a first class business letter. This is unacceptable.

Day before yesterday I had received an email from Rep. Al Lawson asking for reports of delivery problems, so I called his office and told them about this. They were very interested.

"What class mail?"

I've had stuff sent from Prague, Czech Republic. It's shown up in a week. In a few weeks. Or in a few months. Depending if it went airmail, first class, or printed-matter rate.

Way back when I set up my organization's pre-sort account and helped set up the production run for it. Mail might get delivered across town (a small town, 100k people at the time) in 3 days or 10 days--and not be late at 10 days.

How it's mailed matters.
