New coronavirus cases in the U.S. climbed above 40,000 for the second day in a row, as the impact of Hurricane Laura added to the challenges some states face in containing the viruss spread.
In Louisiana, Gov. John Bel Edwards said during an interview with MSNBC that Hurricane Laura, which made landfall as a Category 4 storm, was going to complicate efforts to contain Covid-19, and that it has been a significant challenge to deal with a natural catastrophe during the pandemic.
Louisiana reported 723 new coronavirus cases and 23 additional deaths, according to the Louisiana Department of Health.
Louisiana shut testing sites in advance of the storm, which left at least six dead and tens of thousands without power. Mr. Edwards said it would be difficult to get them running again because of storm damage and staffing issues. They were run by members of the National Guard working on storm relief.

(17,390 posts)The U.S, has experienced over 200,000 excess deaths, though not all of them are necessarily due to COVID. Indeed, due to social distancing measures, you may actually get a reduction in certain types of fatalities.

But experts say one of the most telling measures is how many extra deaths a country experiences above the number who would have been expected to die.
This "excess" death data captures some potentially unrecorded coronavirus deaths, and other deaths that might be the result of strain on healthcare systems and other indirect effects of the epidemic.
It can therefore provide a more complete picture of how a country has been affected overall.
