MGM Resorts to lay off nearly 20,000 furloughed workers

Aug. 28 (UPI) -- MGM Resorts said Friday it will start laying off nearly 20,000 furloughed employees next week.

In a letter to employees, MGM President and CEO Bill Hornbuckle blamed the coronavirus pandemic for ongoing problems nationwide with the gambling and hospitality industry.

Hornbuckle said about 18,000 workers will be laid off.

MGM owns some of the Las Vegas' best-known properties, including the Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand, New York New York and the Mirage -- in addition to casinos and hotels in Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Washington, D.C.

2. The really awful thing is..

That they had not laid them off when the Feds were giving $600 extra a week for unemployment. I bet a lot of these guys were being paid by MGM all this time and making less than $600 a week. I was glad I was laid off immediately and not furloughed because if I was furloughed I would have been making $450/week and instead I was pulling in $728 a week in Unemployment.

4. Furloughed workers generally don't get paid by their employers.

They go straight on unemployment.

was working for her school district and they continued to pay her but she was making less than she would have gotten on Unemployment.

3. Trump will probably try to take executive action to keep them employed
