Black Lives Matter: US teen billed for police overtime after protest

Source: BBC News

A teenager who organised a peaceful Black Lives Matter rally in the US state of New Jersey was asked to pay nearly $2,500 (£1,900) in police overtime costs, US media report.

Emily Gil, 18, said she organised the action to support US anti-racism protests and highlight issues with affordable housing in her community.

But she was shocked to later receive a bill from the local mayor.

The mayor told BBC partner CBS that he was now rescinding the charges.

Ms Gil said the peaceful protest in the borough of Englewood Cliffs on 25 July lasted about 90 minutes and was attended by only 30 to 40 people.

2. The "very fine people" who organized Unite the Right... I imagine they received a bill too, yeah?

Without even mentioning Heather Heyer and the people injured; we're talking about a police helicopter that was destroyed, property damage, city resources tied up, etc.

That's got to be a pretty big bill. Did they pay it all at once or in installments?

All protests. It won’t work. Controlling American freedom will prove to be an admirable opponent. Too bad it won’t work. Wrestling freedom from Americans has been a wasted effort throughout history.

12. It was probably a local ordinance that she wasn't aware of

We had that here and you could not protest without a "parade permit" for like $8,000. We fought city council and had it removed.

If this has been rescinded, as another poster stated,, I'm glad for her.

Move on. Like the group. 😂

“The battle outside is raging. Please...lend a hand.”

The victory was won. Accept the victory, don’t waste time, and apply energies elsewhere. A campaign is a long-term effort. There are 80 days to go, all hands on deck. We don’t have the luxury of celebrating every victory along the way.

Celebrating in large groups without masks is how the other side will self-defeat.

The media’s job in that is to report 5 days after. Five days after their super-spreader events, the news should report the deliberate infections. And question why Republicans are secretly planning to kill the dumb supporters among their ranks. Do they hate them so much, non-filthy rich Trump supporters are being removed from the party? They can’t have a bunch of hillbillies at Mar a Lago.

Of course, this is hyperbole. But that’s how the game of questions is played. Like, “a lot of people are saying the campaign is trying to make people immune by infecting them. Is it true?”

15. The Charges were Rescinded...

Because it was likely these would not stand up in court if Ms. Gil challenged them. It would cost the city and taxpayer's a great deal more than $2,500 to defend themselves in a lawsuit! It would also be seen as an attempt to intimidate and supress citizen's rights to protest.
