A Black man who had run naked through the streets of a western New York city died of asphyxiation after a group of police officers put a hood over his head, then pressed his face into the pavement for two minutes, according to video and records released Wednesday by the mans family.
Daniel Prude died March 30 after he was taken off life support, seven days after the encounter with police in Rochester. His death received no public attention until Wednesday, when his family held a news conference and released police body camera video and written reports they obtained through a public records request.
How did you see him and not directly say, The man is defenseless, buck naked on the ground. Hes cuffed up already. Come on. How many more brothers gotta die for society to understand that this needs to stop? Prudes brother, Joe Prude, asked at a news conference Wednesday.
The videos show Prude, who had taken off his clothes, complying when police ask him to get on the ground and put his hands behind his back. Prude is agitated and shouting as officers let him writhe as he sits on the pavement in handcuffs for a few moments as a light snow falls.

(81,516 posts)Then, they put a white spit hood over his head, a device intended to protect officers from a detainees saliva. At the time, New York was in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic.
Prude demands they remove it. Trying to kill me! he says before making muffled, anguished sounds under the hood.
Then the officers slam Prudes head into the street. One officer holds his head down against the pavement with both hands, saying stop spitting as Prudes shouts turn to whimpers and grunts. Another officer places a knee on his back. The officers appear to become concerned when they notice water coming out of Prudes mouth.
My man. You puking? one says.
Prude stops moving and falls silent. One officer notes that hes been out, naked, in the street for some time. Another remarks, He feels pretty cold.

(38,436 posts)That is what they had learned. Times are now different..But we will see. This happened in March, today is Sept 2. We will see. The fellow needed to be in a mental hospital alive, not in a grave, dead

(19,066 posts)The officer grabs the back of the hood with both hands and cinches it tight. That was horrifying to then listen to the victims muffled yells, it was obvious he wouldnt be able to breath and the officer just held him like they until he was dead. Sickening.

(5,124 posts)It can go so horribly wrong. I work in mental health and I struggle to tell the family members of my clients to call law enforcement if their loved ones are in crisis. We need solutions other than police for mental health emergencies.
For all the idiots who cannot understand why money needs to be redirected to have other solutions. This is why. Police go into these situations with one thing in mind, to be enforcers. They are not thinking about protecting the person that needs help. Yesterday, I read about another man that was shot and killed when the police were called for a wellness check.

the situation & then executed him. This has just got to change or there will be more & more
unrest in America until we get it right!

(9,893 posts)is taken very seriously by the law enforcement community, starting with the AIDS epidemic. In turn, spitting is jail behavior that inmates have learned makes LE lose it very fast. In my state, PA, spitting at LE is chargeable as aggravated assault. Cops and prison guards put up with a lot of spitting. Not defending these police, just giving some context. I'm in mental health and police and mental illness is rarely a good combination. I say "rarely" because I have seen police who are trained do an excellent job of deescalation. Unfortunately, police tactics taught for handling normals is the exact opposite of what works for handling the mentally ill.

(6,265 posts)he deserved treatment. Trump gave these toxics in blue the encouragement to kill unarmed American citizens, African-Americans specifically, but not exclusively, like this during his last campaign, though the exclusives have to act out in an exceedingly threatening manner or start shooting AT THEM to die in a manner such as this.
This is why so many people are protesting.

It might not rise to first or second degree murder, but this is manslaughter at the very least.
