Friday, 05 October 2012 14:42 Joey O'Gorman

Colombia's Prosecutor General on Friday requested an international warrant for the arrest of retired colonel Jorge Plazas for his involvement in the 1999 murder of journalist and humorist Jaime Garzon.

According to the prosecution Plazas allegedly delivered key information to the gunmen who shot the renown journalist in his car as he drove to work in Colombia's capital Bogota. The retired colonel is currently on the run from justice according to reports.

Extradited Colombian paramilitary leader Don Berna, along with five other paramilitaries currently being held in the U.S., have also been called for questioning in relation to the murder.

On Friday, August 13 in 1999 Garzon was driving to work when two men on a motorbike with hidden plates rode up to his car and shot him five times. The death of the popular journalist, comedian, presenter and peace activist caused an outpour of grief in Colombia and has remained one of the most prominent unsolved assassinations of recent decades.

Jaime Hernando Garzón Forero (October 24, 1960 – August 13, 1999 in Bogotá) was a Colombian journalist, a comedian, lawyer, peace activist and political satirist. He was very popular on Colombian television during the 1990s, especially for his political satire. In addition to his work on television, he also had roles as a peace negotiator in the release of FARC guerrillas' hostages. He was murdered by suspected right-wing paramilitary forces in 1999, although the case remains opened and unsolved.

Career

In 1987, the director of the Noticiero de las 7, Antonio Morales Riveira, knew of the fame of the Mayor of Sumapaz in imitating politicians. He brought Garzón to the newscast; it was the first time he would appear on television.[7]

He worked on various television parodies, becoming famous with the TV show Zoociedad (Zoociety) in the 1990s which contained humor about materialistic society and politics. Garzón then started working on a program called "¡Quac! El Noticero", collaborating with actor Diego León Hoyos until 1997.

Garzón created many different and instantly recognizable fictional characters, the last of which was his debut as "Heriberto de la Calle", a shoe polisher who interviewed different personalities, including politicians.

Jaime Garzón[/center]
Radionet, Caracol Noticias
August 13, 1999, in Bogotá, Colombia

Two gunmen killed political satirist Jaime Garzón, host of a daily morning show on the Bogotá station Radionet and contributor to a television news program called "Caracol Noticias." At 6 a.m., as Garzón was driving his Jeep Cherokee to the Radionet studio, two men on a white motorcycle intercepted him, shooting him repeatedly in the head and chest.

Before his death, Garzón had frequently been threatened by Carlos Castaño, leader of the United Self Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC), a right-wing paramilitary organization that is fighting against leftist guerrillas. Garzón's colleagues informed CPJ that the journalist had scheduled a meeting with Castaño for August 14, the day after he was killed. The AUC denied responsibility for Garzón's death, and it remains unclear who ordered the murder. While some local journalists blame the AUC, others blame drug traffickers or the military. The likely motive would have been Garzón's contacts with left-wing guerrilla forces.

Before launching his career as a journalist and satirist 10 years ago, Garzón served as an elected official in Sumapaz, a region near Bogotá that is dominated by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), Colombia's largest leftist guerrilla movement. More recently, Garzón used his stature as a well-respected broadcaster to negotiate for the release of victims of guerrilla kidnappings. He also served on an independent commission that was mediating between the government and the National Liberation Army (ELN), another leftist guerrilla movement, and was scheduled to meet with imprisoned ELN members.

Jaime Garzon, and public memorial

lunes, 6 de septiembre de 2010

Jaime garzon, he is a humorist, He used to talk about the political situation in our country; he represent different characters. my favorite one is "Heriberto de la calle" he was a shoeshine, who used to talk about the problems in the country, or about the peoples' personal life. In my oppinion, was the funniest because he had the "victim" in from of him.

Jaime garzon was murdered in august 13 of 1999.
