(4,291 posts)I, too, remember her from the Avengers. But she stole my adolescent heart when she played Countess Teresa di Vicenzo, wife of James Bond, in On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
Tonight's viewing schedule: binge-watching my DVD set of Avengers, and maybe that Bond movie (will stop playback before the ending).

(10,053 posts)I watched her as a kid - thought her character Mrs. Peel was so cool and badass, wanted to be just like her. Then I watched her decades later as Lady Tyrell and again thought she was so cool and badass and wanted to be just like her. Funny how certain characters that brilliant actors bring to life just stay with you.....

She was actually younger than I thought when she did that role. Patrick Macnee was so much older.
Sorry to see this. R.I.P.

the night before.
I loved "The Avengers." I never missed it. That show was so elegant. And the cars....
Here's where I found out:
It is important for children to have people to look up to, to be inspired by, besides their parents.
Diana Rigg as Emma Peel did that for me.
I wasn't a typical 1970s little girl, I liked adventures, get in trouble, fall out of trees, fight, be tough.

(89 posts)+1 for that lovely show and the incomparable Diana Rigg. (Side note: I saw Rachael Stirling onstage in Labour of Love with Martin Freeman and Tamsin Greig, and she is certainly a very fine actress in her own right.)

(14,174 posts)One of my favourite shows, I remember back then admiring her character (in more ways than one). How she seemed to be an equal to her male partner. Even ribbing him. A strong independent woman. And she could get herself and her partner out of jams by her own ingenuity. I was so used to shows at that time that automatically put the female characters as subservient, or secondary characters, that, even as a boy, that stood out to me.

(13,600 posts)Fun fact: Her character's name was kind of an inside joke. In the advertising business back then, they would refer to sexy ads, like the Noxzema shave cream ads back then ("Take it off, take it all off" ) as having a high "M Appeal," meaning that it appealed to men. When developing the character on The Avengers, they decided to name her "Emma Peel." Diana Rigg had plenty of "M appeal."

(111,270 posts)The 2 part "Rebecca" is on You Tube and worth a watch, just for Rigg's performance of heavy repression and grief turning to madness.
