Wisconsin court sets up possible delay in absentee mailing
Source: NBC affiliate WTMJ in Milwaukee
MADISON, Wis. (AP) The conservative-controlled Wisconsin Supreme Court has ordered that no absentee ballots be mailed until it gives the go-ahead or makes any future ruling about who should be on the ballot.
The order Thursday came in a lawsuit filed by Green Party presidential candidate Howie Hawkins who asked the states highest court to take up his challenge of a Wisconsin Elections Commission decision keeping him off the ballot.
Rapper Kanye West, in a separate case, is also trying to get on the ballot after the commission rejected him.
Municipal election clerks face a Sept. 17 deadline to mail ballots.

(6,622 posts)Ill be dropping my folks ballots off in one municipality and my own in another... if we even receive them in order to fill them out! But our County Clerk was just talking about the risk his department had to take in going ahead with printing in order to have ballots ready to send out on the 17th, knowing that if one of the court cases goes wrong, hell have a helluva problem and expense in getting new ballots printed.
Its so frustrating that this is caused by people just effing with the system.

(50,955 posts)You know that if it doesn't get to you, you can fill out a provisional ballot at a polling place, right? Though, what an unnecessary pain. And a terrible hardship this year for the elderly.
I cannot wait till Joe is elected.

(129,085 posts)after a court case against the Green Party ticket because they swapped out candidates after the filing deadline -
by Chris Brennan, Updated: September 10, 2020- 1:07 PM
Green Party presidential candidate Howie Hawkins will remain on the Pennsylvania ballot, but his running mate Angela Walker must be removed, a state judge ruled late Wednesday. Commonwealth Court Judge J. Andrew Crompton delivered that split verdict in a legal challenge with close connections to the state Democratic Party. The challenge focused on problems with paperwork.
The Green Party on Aug. 3 filed nominating petitions for two candidates from Pennsylvania Elizabeth Faye Scroggin for president and Neal Taylor Gale for vice president but swapped them out a week later for Hawkins, a retired Teamster from New York, and Walker, a labor activist who drives a dump truck in South Carolina.
The party didnt file a candidate affidavit for Gale as required by state law. Scroggin faxed her affidavit to the Pennsylvania Department of State by the deadline, but there was a delay in printing it. Larry Otter, an attorney for the Green Party, said the Democratic players in the legal case filed an appeal to the state Supreme Court on Thursday. Andrea Merida, a Hawkins campaign spokesperson, said its clear that the Democrats are not interested in stating their case to the voters; instead they engage in party suppression, which is voter suppression, to get an edge.
The challenge was filed by Pittsburgh attorney Clifford Levine, who has done legal work for the Pennsylvania Democratic Party. Levines clients are Paul Stefano, chair of the Lawrence County Democratic Party, and Tony Thomas, who ran as a Democrat for City Council in Wilkes-Barre last year. Asked if the state Democratic Party was backing the challenge, Levine this week said Theyre aware of it." The state Democratic Party did not respond to requests for comment.

As a note - in 2016, Hillary lost by about 44K votes and Stein got 49K votes (which was twice as much as she got in 2012 when she ran).

(129,085 posts)with no clear agenda (and perhaps without their Russian masters to boot, who have bigger fish to fry), so they are getting sloppy about how they put their ticket together.
All I care about at this point is to get my ballot and vote straight D (although nowadays we have to do that individually and no longer have a "straight ticket" option).
ETA - Just realized another reason for their dysfunction - many of their previous supporters have broken off to create yet another fantasy party - this time, the "People's Party". It's populated by the same old has-beens and some newly indoctrinated.

(44,973 posts)Like has been pointed out, the ballots are supposed to go out in a week. Now that might be delayed for who knows how long. Especially considering if allowed on the ballot, new ballots will have to be printed.

(129,085 posts)since we have vote-by-mail too (which I plan to do because I don't trust the ES&S machines), and I believe they are due to start going out to those who already requested and were approved for them, sometime "mid-September" (one news site indicated 9/14 - 9/19, which is next week). So if there is an issue with appeals in the courts regarding the Green Party nonsense, I am hoping it doesn't impact the ballot mailing. At least here, our State Supreme Court is majority Democrat (5 - 2).

(44,973 posts)at least they won't sue to get on the ballot.
Maybe they will sue to get off the ballot (J/k).

(6,622 posts)Scott McDonell, Dane County Clerk: Ballots have been and are being delivered to communities across Dane County as we speak. With 150,000 absentee requests on file as of today, there is no way we could meet the federal statutes to mail out absentee ballots on file next week at this point. This decision jeopardizes the right of overseas and military voters especially in light of the challenges we have seen with the US Postal Service.
If the Supreme Court were to change the ballot at this incredibly late time Dane County would have to:
-redesign the ballot (also in Spanish)
-burn new election media
-test the ballots
-print 500,000 new ballots
-package and sort the new ballots
-deliver the ballots
Then municipal clerks would have to:
-print labels
- sort the requests by ballot type
-stuff the envelopes
- mail them
Madison has close to 100,000 requests and was planning on working all weekend... For other large counties the situation will be pretty much the same as Dane.
This is potentially a huge disaster. Just the delay of a decision is deeply irresponsible and jeopardizes the integrity of our election.

(44,973 posts)Even requiring to stop mailing the ballots, like Wisconsin Supreme court did, is creating a mess.
If Wisconsin Supreme court was to request greens be added to the ballot, it's really going to create a disaster.
