Nobel Peace Prize goes to World Food Program for efforts to combat hunger
Source: Washington Post
The World Food Program was awarded the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.
"The need for international solidarity and multilateral cooperation is more conspicuous than ever," said Berit Reiss-Andersen, the chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, announcing the prize in Oslo. She said the organization would receive the award "for its efforts to combat hunger."
The award is an acknowledgment of the central role the Rome-based organization plays in dealing with impoverished people caught in or fleeing from conflict. The WFP, which was established in 1961, has become the primary international organization for people dealing with hunger -- at a time when climate change, and numerous prolonged conflict in the Middle East and Africa, is exacerbating the challenge.
Millions in Syria and Yemen depend each month on the WFP for survival. The organization says that more than 800 million people are chronically hungry, the majority of them living in conflict-stricken areas. Though other organizations have won the peace prize -- most recently the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, in 2017 -- the World Food Program is particularly sprawling. The organization has 17,000 staff worldwide, works in 80-some countries, and says it has more than 20 ships, 92 planes, and 5,600 trucks on the move on any given day.

Yesterday's announcement was an hour "later" than typical and today's was an hour "earlier" than expected - I guess so they could go run to their bunker and hide from the in the WH on our side of the pond.
Original article -
"The need for international solidarity and multilateral cooperation is more conspicuous than ever," said Berit Reiss-Andersen, the chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, announcing the prize in Oslo. She said the organization would receive the award "for its efforts to combat hunger."
And as a note about the OP and "hunger" - I don't know WTF to say - RIGHT HERE IN THE U.S., the BREAD BASKET OF THE WORLD, WE have a "hunger" problem that is NO DIFFERENT than people around the rest of the world except OURS is due to GREED. After this pandemic and extreme recession, we are probably close to 50 million who are food insecure.
Among U.S. households with children under age 18:
86.4 percent of households with children were food secure in 2019. Household food insecurity affected 13.6 percent of households with children in 2019. In some of these food-insecure households only adults were food insecure, while in others children also experienced food insecurity. In 7.1 percent of households with children, only adults were food insecure. Both children and adults were food insecure in 6.5 percent of households with children (2.4 million households). Children are usually protected from substantial reductions in food intake even in households with very low food security. Nevertheless, in about 0.6 percent of households with children (213,000 households), one or more child also experienced reduced food intake and disrupted eating patterns at some time during the year.

(129,096 posts)that unless there is some "true" breakthrough halt of violence within or between countries brokered by someone, they might give it to WHO, on behalf of all the "First Responders" who have been working on this pandemic (including those who might have traveled to other countries to help). WHO has its own issues and I think we have even cut off funding from them, but this pandemic is unprecedented in terms of its scope.

Trump to host a "virtual rally" on Rush Limbaugh show after dismissing idea of a virtual debate http://hill.cm/xwZKBbw

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh announced that President Trump will host a virtual rally on his nationally syndicated show on Friday as Trump seeks to gin up enthusiasm among his supporters heading into Election Day. Im thrilled to announce that our commander-in-chief, President Donald Trump, will be right here tomorrow hosting the largest virtual rally in radio history, Limbaugh said on his show Thursday afternoon. It will be special, and I am really looking forward to it.
The conservative host, who boasts 15.5 million listeners per day according to Talkers Magazine, also said that listeners can submit questions for the president. Limbaugh's announcement was prerecorded, as the 69-year-old is currently undergoing treatment of stage 4 lung cancer. Trump awarded Limbaugh the Medal of Freedom at the State of the Union speech in February.
The president has said in recent days he wants to go back on the campaign trail after testing positive for COVID-19 last week, which resulted in him temporarily suspending planned campaign appearances. Trump said Thursday morning that he would not attend a virtual debate against Democratic rival Joe Biden after the commission overseeing the debates moved next week's scheduled in-person town hall online to protect the health of those involved.
Im not going to do a virtual debate, Trump said in an interview on Fox Business, adding, Im not going to waste my time with a virtual debate. Thats not what debating is all about. You sit behind a computer and do a debate, that is ridiculous." Trump was treated at Walter Reed Medical Center for four days before returning to the White House on Monday. The campaign has not confirmed in multiple interviews when the president last tested negative.

Will red don be snuggling up to him in the same room, considering that they both called Covid a hoax? No, didn't think so.

(129,096 posts)I was working a 7 am - 3:30 pm schedule so when I was commuting, I was leaving at 6 am. I like being up and about during the full time of "daylight" - from sunrise to sunset.
But then by the time it's 8 pm, I start slowing down and TRYING to get ready for bed, but the past week, it's been a nightmare of bedtimes of 11 pms and midnights (but still back up at 4 am-ish).

(57,073 posts)I'm good for a few hrs, then zzzzz. Lol
Seems all I do anymore is eat, sleep, DU & read.
I used to work 5am-12:30pm, so I would leave for work around 4:30am, then be in bed by around 6-7pm.

(129,096 posts)But since March, I haven't been able to even do that.
I have been trying to closely keep track of what my state and city are doing with respect to the pandemic - usually watching their pressers because stuff changes daily with respect to openings and closings. And since that takes some time from my sometimes labor-intensive hobbies, then I run out of hours in the day.
I'm glad that I am retired because trying to do this while trying to focus on work, would be nuts.

(57,073 posts)Important to get some distance, for perspective and sanity, imo.
Dunno how folks can stay focused on work tasks. I find it increasingly difficult to focus on reading fiction.

with the executive director indicated they really need it. I also just saw an advertisement for donations in the US which stated that one in five children in the USA is now food insecure due to Covid. It makes me really sad.

David Beasley, WFP Executive Director, responds to the good news...
We are deeply humbled to receive the #NobelPeacePrize. This is an incredible recognition of the dedication of the @WFP family, working to end hunger everyday in 80+ countries.
Thank you @NobelPrize for this incredible honor! https://t.co/bHcS0usWQa

(4,787 posts).. would not even have been nominated for the 2020 prize, because the outbreak exploded after that date.
The WFP, btw, is an arm of the United Nations.

(1,832 posts)The Nobel Peace Prize for 2020 is awarded to the World Food Programme (WFP), for its efforts to combat hunger, for its contribution to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict.
Alfred Nobel wished in his testament to give this prize to: "Those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind. To the person who has done the most or best to advance fellowship among nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies, and the establishment and promotion of peace congresses."
Based on this critics has for years now complained. "We recognise the great value of the World Food Program, but the 2020 prize is much less ambitious than Nobels idea. The committee again deals with arbitrary, single aspects of the war problem, and never addresses the root causes that Nobel wished to remove."
