Louisiana and Texas brace for Hurricane Delta as storm hits coasts
Source: CNN
Hurricane Delta's rain bands and tropical-storm-force winds belted the Louisiana and Texas coasts late Friday morning as storm-fatigued residents brace for predicted "life-threatening" surge, flash flooding, ferocious winds and possible tornadoes.
Delta's center is about 130 miles south of Louisiana. It remains a Category 3 major hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph.
The storm is "expected to bring hurricane conditions and a life-threatening storm surge to portions of the northern Gulf Coast later today," the National Hurricane Center said.
About 5 million people are under flash flood watches from Louisiana through southwest Tennessee. Rainfall could exceed flash flood levels across most of Louisiana, the National Weather Service says. Rain totals could reach 6 to 10 inches or more in the storm's direct path, forecasters say.

(10,495 posts)Here in East Texas we have gotten dinged this year twice, but my heart goes out to Lake Charles. I have been over there and learned the difference between a CAT 4 and a CAT 3. Rita and Ike were really bad until I saw what Laura has done.

(101,321 posts)Power was out in more than 453,000 homes and businesses, according to tracking website poweroutage.us, as the Category 2 storm roared ashore with winds approaching 100 mph. The storm has since weakened to a Category 1 as it moved inland.
Conditions along the coast had deteriorated rapidly as the storm approached and forecasters said the storm will weaken rapidly as it moves inland. But first, residents will have to deal with several hours of dangerous conditions, including life-threatening storm surge, said CNN meteorologist Tom Sater.
The center of Delta made landfall a little more than 10 miles from where deadly Hurricane Laura slammed into the coast in August. While Delta is not as powerful as Laura -- which left much damage that still hasn't been fixed -- it does have a broader wind field, Sater said.
