Nuclear arms talks spiral into confusion as Russia rejects US 'delusion'

Source: The Guardian

US-Russian nuclear arms control talks have sunk into confusion after the top American negotiator claimed there was “an agreement in principle” between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, a claim Moscow quickly rejected as a “delusion”.

Marshall Billingslea, the US special envoy for arms control, said he had flown to Helsinki on Monday to meet the Russian deputy foreign minister, Sergei Ryabkov, on the understanding that there could be an imminent breakthrough in discussions on whether to extend the 2010 New Start treaty, which limits the number of deployed strategic warheads on either side, and which expires in February.

“We believe that there is an agreement in principle at the highest levels of our two governments. That’s why I cut short my trip to Asia and made a beeline for Helsinki when the Russians called and wanted to sit down,” Billingslea told a Washington thinktank, in an apparent suggestion that there had been an informal verbal agreement between Trump and Putin.

He added the US condition for extension would be a verified freeze on the complete arsenals of both countries, including non-strategic (short-range or “tactical”) warheads.

2. Russia thinking it's over for Trump ?

Looks like they were hoping to announce a deal which we would later on find out was just empty words . It would help Trump in the election and they would not have to stand by it afterwards since Trump wouldn't do anything.

But a different administration would take steps to hold them to it. And they now think it's likely there will be another president so they don't want to make any deal they might have to stick to or be punished for backing out of.

he may figure that Trump's right wing militia's will cause mayhem after the election. Trump/Putin have so divided our country.

Trump needs Putin and Putin knows it. Trump may have to give Putin more of our intelligence secrets to keep his support?

to make some sort of trump-imposed deadline for some sort of agreement on arms. What an idiot and rump looks stupid as usual for claiming that he's the best negotiator, and we'll get tired of 'winning'.

Not. One. Damn. Thing. Not for the country. He sure has grifted his ass off so I guess he has accomplished that.

Assuming Biden wins I would love to see the first order of business after inauguration to be the arrest of Trump and his family.

Is that Trump is NOT very smart.

About anything.

Like in - Trump appears to me to have an IQ around 95, and absolutely no knowledge to pull from. He is not who you want negotiating ANYTHING.
