to evacuate
CNN)In a matter of hours, the Silverado Fire in Irvine, California, has doubled in size, according to the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA).
The fire spread to 4,000 acres with no containment, OCFA said Monday. It is zero percent contained and has jumped Highway 241, the OFCA public information officer said on Twitter. About 20,000 homes were evacuated and 500 personnel were battling the flames.
The University of California, Irvine suspended all campus operations due to hazardous smoke and ash, university officials announced. Only essential employees -- including those who work in housing and dining -- should report to campus. All other employees were urged to stay or return home.
The inferno began as a vegetation fire at about 6:47 a.m. local time Monday in the area of Santiago Canyon Road and Silverado Canyon Road, according to the city of Irvine.
The city of Irvine issued an immediate evacuation order for about 60,000 residents as the fire rapidly spread.

(9,655 posts)Two firefighters suffered critical injuries Monday as they battled a fast-growing wildfire in Southern California.
The men suffered second- and third-degree burns while battling the Silverado Fire near Irvine, Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy told reporters.
I didn't read the full article because I already read about this elsewhere. Both firefighters have been intubated. Somewhere between 50 to 65% of their bodies have burns.
Hoping and praying for recovery for both of them.
